Biography

  • Hailing from ‘The Valleys’ of Wales, is John Cale, a musician and composer who is best known for being a founding member of the rock band the Velvet Underground.

In the mid 1960s, Cale alongside with his friend Lou Reed formed the band the Velvet Underground, but unfortunately left the band three years later following disagreements with Reed, but still had a creative contribution to the albums “The Velvet Underground & Nico”, “White Light/White Heat” and the eponymous third album.

Cale began pursuing various endeavors in the 1970s including working as a record producer and working on various arrangements on an array of albums. He produced the Stooges’ self-titled debut album, and made a guest appearance on Nick Drake’s second album “Bryter Layter”. He started to make a selection of solo records, endorsing a sort of folk pop vibe, and also dabbled in classical music, which led him to compose for soundtracks. Around this time he became a talent scout for Island’s A&R department. He released a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” which was famed for being disturbing and completely different to the original, and in 1977 he released a culmination of his solo projects from the last couple of years that resulted in a short collection of songs called “Animal Justice”. Two years later, he recorded a live album called “Sabotage/Live”, which was recorded at the prestigious CBGB. He had a short stint with Ze Records, releasing a record called “Music for a New Society”, followed the next year by “Caribbean Sunset”. Due to his daughter, Eden being born, he took an understandable hiatus.

Returning in the 1990s, Cale made a comeback recording two brand new songs called “Hunger” and “First Evening” on Hector Zazou’s “Sahara Blue” album. He also rekindled his working relationship with Lou Reed, leading to a short reunion of the Velvet Undeground in 1993. He released his only album of the decade, “Walking on Locusts” too. In the 2000s, Cale recorded the Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah”. In the mid 2000s, he produced Alejandro Escovedo’s eighth studio album “The Boxing Mirror”, and then in 2007 he recorded a cover of the song “All My Friends” originally by LCD Soundsystem. It was featured on a tribute album.

At a performance in 2009, “Paris 1919” was performed on a tour in its entirety.

Live reviews

  • John Cale

The enigmatic Welshman, John Cale, is best known as the co-founder of Velvet Underground, changing the future of popular music with their albums, “The Velvet Underground & Nico” and “White Light/White Heat.” Yet it is with his solo work that Cale took his experimental, drone-laden music to more expansive levels. Saying this, his output remains accessible despite its grounding in classical and avant-garde influenced arrangements.

One is never entirely sure what to expect from a John Cale performance. He has been known to play with a full orchestra, creating huge depth on hits such as Paris 1919, with his songs very much suited to such accompaniment. In recent years, he has also found inspiration from contemporary electronica, incorporating these sounds into his music, which can be heard in his KEXP performance of his 1974 song ‘You Know More Than I Know,’ incorporating various effects and synthesisers. He has also collaborated with modern artists, most notably LCD Soundsystem. His upcoming tour, titled ‘LOOP>60Hz: Transmissions from the Drone Orchestra’ looks to explore the relationship of rock and drone, which is undoubtedly an exciting prospect that may see Cale return to the sounds he created during his early experimentations, yet of course with a contemporary twist. It is likely to be left-field whilst still maintaining pop sensibilities. Although with John Cale, it is best to expect the unexpected, as throughout his career he has consistently challenged conventions and explored new avenues in his own compositions. A drone-rock orchestra sounds something definitely worth checking out.

  • There are very few bands or artists with the same iconic namesake as American experimental rock band The Velvet Underground. The band that went on to change the face of rock music was originally founded by Welsh musician John Cale who remains the last surviving member.

As you can imagine there are a huge amount of Velvet Underground impersonators and tribute acts around the world yet John is the last way to see a truly authentic performance of tracks by the authentic band. The ageing musician has also enjoyed a commercial career of his own and his solo discography has amassed a sturdy following so there is no wonder the majority of tonight's setlist is lifted from these albums. He showcases his musicianship throughout the show yet it shines brightest during an instrumental bridge found on 'Mercenaries (Ready for War)' and the poignant 'December Rains'. The VE fans are not left disappointed as he rounds off the main set with an incomparable cover of 'Sister Ray'.

  • John Cale walked on, took the mic and instantly threw us into a mesmerising pit of incredible sound with 'Story of Blood'. The bassist was using a bow which is something I have never seen.

John Cale is undoubtedly a performance artist as well as an incredible musician. He was fierce with every single note, pulling these strange faces, as if he were deep in a private world as we watched.

'Half Past France' was more spoken word, as if it were a sermon in a huge cathedral with the ghosts of the words dancing around the room.

During 'Wasteland' the lights in the room changed to red and every member of the audience glowed red creating a strange dramatic scene.

The music was unlike anything I had ever heard live and was vastly different to the studio produce versions.

I hope to get further opportunities to see him, it was amazing.

  • Ich habe John Cale Anfang der 90er Jahre unplugged mit seiner Geige im Metropol gesehen und war begeistert. '93 dann nochmal mit Velvet Underground in der Fabrik (?), ebenfalls ein tolles Erlebnis.
