Biography

  • Chevelle are an alternative metal band from Grayslake, Illinois, US, currently signed to Epic Records, having formed in 1995, selling over four million albums in their long career.

Originally composed of three brothers, Pete Loeffer (lead vicars and guitar), Sam Loeffer (drums and percussion) and Joe Loeffer (bass and backing vocals), Chevelle have had a successful career creating radio-friendly metal heavily indebted to Tool's melodic vocals and Helmet's aggressive, driven riffs. They have sold over four million albums in the United States, achieving moderate chart success.

In 1999, Chevelle released their Steve Albini produced debut album "Point #1," receiving moderate reviews, including a Dove Award for 'Best Hard Music Album.' Following several high-profile support slots on tours with Sevendust, Machine Head and Filter, Chevelle grew in popularity, eventually signing to Epic Records to release their second album, "Wonder What's Next" in 2002. The album was a commercial success, with the single "The Red" reaching number three on the Mainstream Rock Charts, with the album peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Charts.

Their third album, "This Type of Thinking" (2004) achieved more commercial success, reaching number eight on the Bilboard Charts. However, following this release, Joe Loeffer left the band, a split was not entirely amicable, with Dean Bernardini becoming their full-time replacement bassist.

Chevelle have embarked on many high profile tours, supporting Nickleback on an arena tour as well as main stage slots on Ozzfest's bill. Their success continued through a further four albums, all achieving moderate commercial success. 2007's "Vena Sera" debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Charts, selling 62,000 copies within its first week of release. For their sixth album, "Hats of the Bull" (2011) they attempted to incorporate new sounds and ideas, gaining praise as being a positive progression, debuting at number 20 on the Billboard charts.

Having signed with a supposedly Christian rock label, Squint Entertainment, the band created controversy due to their appearance at the Ozzfest tours, playing alongside bands such as Cradle of Filth, who were known to have satanic themes in their music. Chevelle did not denounce their faith but they insisted their music was not an avenue for the expression of it, instead it was a purely musical pursuit and not a "pedestal for preaching."

Live reviews

  • Chevelle

It’s an unspoken rule among power trios to sound bigger than every other band in existence. From Rush, to Muse, from Motorhead through to Biffy Clyro it’s almost a pressure on them to make up for their lack of members by sounding monstrously huge in every other respect. A lot of the time this means that when playing live their sound has to be bolstered by a couple of other musicians. Understandably so of course, in Muse’s case it’s very impressive that they have just the one, but in the case of Grayslake Illinois natives Chevelle, three is all they need to rock with the intensity of a natural disaster with none of the devastation afterwards.

Fronted by the Loeffler brothers Pete and Sam on guitar and drums respectively, Chevelle do a fine job of bringing their undeniable heaviness to the forefront of their live shows. However, what puts them above and beyond their post-grunge peers is how well they incorporate their subtler, alternative rock and post-hardcore influences into their bludgeoning alt.metal. While they might bring the righteous mosh with them wherever they go, their music is by no means stupid, giving their audiences something for the head as well as the heart. Chevelle may not be as revered over on this side of the pond as the power trios listed above, but they do deserve to be, so next time they’re over take a chance on them. You will not regret it!

  • My now husband first got me listening to Chevelle back in 2004, and since then I've wanted to see them live, so naturally I grabbed the opportunity by the danglies when they announced UK tour dates, including Manchester!

The venue was surprisingly small, and I was even more surprised to find it hadn't sold out, you forget when you're a fan of a band that they're not necessarily popular yet though in your area, I hope this changes!

The support acts (LTNT and Black Map) were an amazing prelude to what was to come, but Chevelle just reigned supreme. Pete, Dean and Sam put on an amazing show, everything was spot on, they played a spectrum of songs, new and old, (well, nothing from Point #1, but plenty of oldies for those who've listened from the beginning to enjoy) 'Jars', 'The Red' and 'Send the Pain Below' being particular crowd pleasers.

If there was anything for me to pick on, it would be my fellow gig goers, many were very nonchalant about what was a spectacular performance, which does grate on you, what's the point of being at the front if you're just going to stand and stare, like an emotionless zombie? Save the front for those who want total immersion to connect with their favourite band!

I hope this didn't put the guys off, I'm keeping everything crossed that they come back to the UK to treat us to another amazing gig, keep it up guys!

  • Chevelle put on one hell of a headbanger show in Salt Lake 2014. With the crowd 100% on board, singing the songs unprompted, their energy became irresistible. Although they didn't play some of the songs I was hoping for, they did surprise me with ones I wasn't expecting and I'm glad they did. There was a point near the end where Pete, the lead singer, messed up on a song. I wouldn't have noticed if he'd not said anything, but then he joked that it proves they don't lipsinc to tracks. They're like the kind of guys I like hanging out with.

The atmosphere to the show was great, with light effects, a cool backdrop, and recorded quotations during brief song breaks for humor or deep thought. They create an epic show that's good for friends that want to feel the power of hard and heavy alternative rock.

  • I've loved Chevelle ever since they released Vitamin R in 2004. 10 years on, multiple albums and I finally got to see them last night. I was not disappointed, they know how to command a stage and the audience with vigour and flare. I was quite ill with a sore throat but I couldn't help but belt out 'The Red' along with everyone, and when they played 'The Clincher', 'Send the Pain below' and 'Face to the Floor' I was ecstatic.

A very special mention to LTNT and Black Map for their solid performances - truly great support acts who i hope will rise to more fame. The lead of Black Map has one incredibly powerful voice! LTNT I found had impressive range in their instrumentals and singing style, I hope to see more of them on the UK circuit.

  • Grateful start on the concert. The whole show was like "Ye ok it's live about some heavier riffs" but nothing more. The bass was a little bit to loud an the stage performances could have been more! More like more challenging so the audience doesn't look away. All the songs sounds pretty the same stile and that led us to a moment when I don't am interested anymore. It sounds good with their metal riffs but more should have happened. Just look at Avenged Sevenfold! They walks everywhere and it's not to much. TALK TO THE AUDIENCE! See them in their eyes!

But a good start att the concert. Work on guys!!!

  • Chevelle was fantastic, they put on an amazing show!!! I definitely did not expect there to be a mosh pit.....at first this was somewhat annoying, but after I became used to pushing all the maniacs away, I enjoyed the fantastic view due to the giant hole they left in front of me while they revved up for the next moment to explode. I have some legit war wounds on my shin, but they were worth the amazing visual of the band. Chevelle freakin rocks and they made me feel alive again...well maybe that had a little bit to do with being a small part of a giant mosh pit. Thanks for the experience!!!! Sincerly,

  • As an avid concert goer and with chevelle as one of my top 5 favorite bands, I've been waiting for years to see Chevelle in Florida, and the wait was well worth it. They opened with Crobot, an up and coming band, who were extremely entertaining and lively. Probably the best opener I've ever seen! But chevelle themselves were possibly the best show I've ever been to. Their songs sounded phenomenal live, and Pete, Sam, and dean were obviously having fun performing for us. I even caught the set list from Pete!! I'll never forget my first chevelle concert and neither will you. SEE THEM you won't regret it :)

  • Chevelle has it's own definition of pure talent. I bought tickets through presale because I knew it was going to sell out, and it did! They played at HOB in San Diego and they killed it! They played new songs and old favorites. Everything was seamless, no hiccups at all. 3 encores! The crowd was completely wild, everyone was singing along at the top of their lungs. The lights. Their sound. Their presence. Their TALENT. They didn't disappoint! It was like watching their albums come to life! Definitely will go see them again.

  • Chevelle is one of those unique bands that doesn't own a single bad song. That makes their concerts even better! They never disappoint and ALWAYS put on a great concert. Pete (singer) even noticed that everytime they've come to this venue, the crowd gets bigger and bigger. This time it was sold out! Way to go Chevelle! They are genuinely nice guys and rock it hard. They had a mosh pit going from the moment they came on stage! With Chevelle you are never disappointed! Can't wait to see them again!

  • Chevelle completely destroyed the Marquee Theatre in Tempe last night for a sold out show. Pete sounded absolutely incredible live. Their setlist was a great mix of material ranging from Wonder What's Next to their newest album, La Gárgola - which is one of my favorite albums this year. The light show was also fantastic and complimented the transitions in the song well. Definitely one of my top bands to see live and I've seen over 20 this year so far. Don't miss seeing them!
