Biography

  • Canadian Electro-Funk duos aren’t exactly in abundance but Chromeo have used this to their advantage and have carved a strong niche for themselves.

The Montreal duo of David Macklovitch (the older brother of Fool’s Gold owner A-Trak) and Patrick Gemayel first came together musically when Macklovitch joined Gemayel’s band. When the band fell apart the duo began producing music together and, due to a welcome touch of serendipity, ended up signing to Canadian producer Tiga’s ‘Turbo’ label.

In 2004 David and Patrick (or Dave 1 and P-Thuggg as they are known) released their debut album entitled ‘She’s In Control’ which cemented their sound and began to get the group noticed. A lot of the buzz surrounding the album followed the release of the song ‘Needy Girl’ which became a club staple around the world and really helped to elevate Chromeo’s presence to the next level.

Live dates with the likes of the UK’s Bloc Party and a slew of remixes helped to fuel the build up to their follow up album ‘Fancy Footwork’ which once again was met with praise from journalists all over. And from then on the successes kept rolling first with third Album ‘Business Casual’ and then into 2014’s ‘White Women’.

‘White Women’ featured the likes of Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Solange Knowles who helped to propel the album to 6 and 11 in the Canadian and US charts respectively. It even did well internationally all going to show that whilst Chromeo’s sound is in no way conventional, its appeal stretches far and wide.

Live reviews

  • Chromeo

We went to go see Chromeo's live set at Drai's night club. They were amazing! They only played for about an hour but it was a good set. They played songs from all of their albums (except I think she's in Control), with a focus on their newest one.

The only down side was that they didn't go on until 1:30. I didn't know that's when shows usually started at Drai's so I definitely came too early. Regardless, the show was good. Dave had a mirror guitar that was a big crowd hit. P had a much bigger role than I thought he would and it made the show that much better. They played everything there and of course had their special keyboards with them. I would recommend going to see them even if you're only kind of a fan. I took my boyfriend who only knew 3 songs and he had a great time.

  • I have been following Chromeo since they had a gig in NYC with less than 100 people in attendance. They have grown into a band that play huge venues and festivals around the world. Sometimes I feel very proud of them!

Their music is funky dance tunes that reflect disco, yacht rock and electro. Even if you don't know their music and go to a show you will be dancing and wiggling around.

They just released their new album called 'White Women' which is starting to make them a house hold name. If that's how you know them, do yourself a favour and listen to all their albums but especially 'Fancy Footwork' and the song 'Needy Girl' (which was their springboard to fame).

If you have been thinking about seeing them, it's time to take action, don't deprive yourself of a night full of fun.

  • I've seen Chromeo three times before and have been to Red Rocks so many times I can't count -- at least 10 for sure. I saw Chromeo's set at Coachella this year and the set seemed a bit flat. I was worried that maybe one of my favorite bands ever had run out of steam on their current tour.

I couldn't have been been any more wrong.

Red Rocks has a tendency to bring out the best in any artist or band and boy did it ever. Simply put, it was one of the absolute best shows I've ever seen. Chromeo's production quality was through the roof and the entire set was one non-stop dance party. It was one of those shows you'll remember as long as you live.

  • Get ready to dance and shake that b00ty! Chromeo will take you back to the 80's with a energy-fulled show! The lighting, the instruments, the music, the way they dance...everything is all about the 80's. Even if you don't like to dance, they'll make you do it. It's a great show! Kinda short (1:20) but more than enough, my feet were sore already haha.

The energy from the people during their most known songs was awesome. I felt really comfortable, everyone was smiling, jumping, dancing... I wanna go back. Please buy a ticket and go to see them! The funk lordz are going to deliver!!!

  • Chromeo was hands down the best concert I've seen in 2015. Their energy, style, and presence requires you to watch them the entire time. It was the first concert I've been to in years where every member of the audience was dancing. It was truly amazing to be part of a crowd where everyone was on the same page and had the same agenda: to dance their hearts out. Chromeo fueled our fire and forced us to move throughout the entire show. I left the Apollo feeling empty, sweaty, and too alive.

  • I love chromeo, and thought their latest album ''White Women' was so great and much fun. I've seen Chromeo perform 4 times, the first in 2009. They killed it. Very unfortunately, their performance at Central Park last night was nearly shameful...I had more faith in them. The entire set was 46 minutes, and Lacking any sort of enthusiasm. Best part by far was the lights, this aspect has been great at every show I've seen. I will continue to dance to Chromeo - in my living room.

  • It was an infuriating disappointment! I flew into NY from Prague for a week and bought tickets to see Chromeo with my brother for his birthday and the event said Chromeo live AND Chromeo (Dj set). Imagine our disappointment to arrive and find out that Chromeo was not playing a live show. The venue was so packed we couldn't even dance to enjoy the djs, so we didn't even stay for the Chromeo set. I cannot believe we spent so much money for a scam of a show

  • Absolutely loved Chromeo! This was my second time seeing them - the first being in Montreal for Osheaga this year - and it was even better than the first. I loved the energy, their style on stage, the light show and especially their music. At one point I had a friend on my shoulders (during their performance of Over Your Shoulder) and she may have broken out into tears of joy. 10/10, will see again!

  • This was a great show, Le Youth was pretty standard fare, and Goldroom was better, but when Chromeo came on stage, shit got seriously funky!

Danced until 3AM and could have kept going for 4 more hours if they were playing!

Must see! the DJ Set was good, but I want to see them play live with a backing band like the Tiny Desk Concert.

  • Uhhh... if you weren't there, you won't understand! But I'll try to explain... Funky, groovy, disco-y, and nothin' but a good time. If you're on the fence about seeing Chromeo, do yourself a favor and buy the ticket and there will not be a shred of doubt after the show that you made the right decision.
