Biography

  • They aren't actually from Tokyo just to let you know, this band is from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. They do however make amazing Indie Rock music. (just for the record)

After playing around with music just for fun, the four Indie Rock individuals; David Monks -Vocalist and bassist, Graham Wright - keyboardist, Josh Hook - guitarist and Greg Alsop - drummer. The group was formed that would go on to become known at Tokyo Police club in 2005.

Tokyo Police club gained attention through their distinct alternative rock ,after they began to do small shows around Toronto, not long after they were asked to play at the "Pop Montreal Festival" this was an amazing opportunity. After this performance it was not long until they were signed to record label; Paper Bag Records.

In 2008 the band released their debut album "Elephant shell" this album was well received by critics and received a 9 out of 10 from NME and managed to debut at no 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts in the US and and in Canada was number 10 on the album charts.

The band has played many events and featured at many festivals most notably Coachella, Reading and Leeds festival. They have even worked alongside Weezer, in which Tokyo Police Club played in the last 6 weeks of their Troublemaker tour in 2008.

As of 2014 the band have released four studio albums, their most recently being "Forcefield" which was released March 25. This album received 4 out of 5 stars from Alternative Press and the song "Bambi" from this album peaked at number 5 on the Canadian Alternative Rock Chart.

Live reviews

  • Tokyo Police Club

I've been waiting about 6 years to see Tokyo Police Club play live and let me tell you, it was well worth the wait. Best concert I've ever been to. The band had so much energy and you could just feel it in every song and you know they all were enjoying themselves because each member had a smile on their face the entire time. David's stage banter felt so natural and like he was talking to you specifically and he made eye contact with me a bunch of times and smiled. That was great. Their set list was beyond perfect; they played all their hit songs and few other just as good ones which I wasn't expecting (I was expecting them to play everything off Forcefield). They did an encore and played 2 songs! David Monks was such a crowd pleaser. He would reach out and touch us and he even came off stage and let us touch him lol. The whole thing was just a spectacular experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. 10/10 love you guys. As for opening acts they had The Pack A.D and Said the Whale. I enjoyed both bands they had open for them.

  • Tokyo Police Club, Geographer, and Said The Whale May 13, 2014 at Black Cat

I went into this show with very high expectations. I'm a fan of both Said the Whale and Tokyo Police Club, at least casually. When a band has at least 2 singles on my favorites list, I consider myself a fan. I'm lazy about exploring back catalog songs or the rest of an album from a band. I'd rather spend my time looking for the next exciting band than getting to know a band inside and out. That strategy backfired on me at this show.

Sure, I heard all 5 songs I love from Said the Whale and Tokyo Police Club plus a few others I liked enough, but I also heard tons of stuff that bored me. Worse, I had this incorrect idea in my head that Tokyo Police Club would be high-energy. Not so much. Their songs are mostly a relaxed tempo. Not so good when you are sleep deprived and fighting to stay awake. Based on his banter, the lead singer seemed like a very nice person to talk to, though.

  • Canadian indie rock outfit Tokyo Police Club are now universally recognised for their namesake if not their music. The group who only formed in 2005 have been on countless 'ones to watch' and 'hotly tipped' lists for years and with three albums of solid material in their decade long career they have proven there is substance to the hype machine.

In the UK they are still considered something of a cult flavour so are restricted to the intimate venues yet this delights the fanbase further as they have the opportunity to get up close and personal with David Monks and co. They hold the attention of the room with absolute ease for a twenty song setlist which demonstrates a cutting lyrical voice, great instrumentals and a sound set for stadiums. The new material sounds great and the devoted fans known the choruses already and sing at the same level as the rest of the crowd for favourites such as 'Tesselate' and 'Wait Up (Boots of Danger)'.

  • It was biblical; short of the heavens opening!

Great evening, awesome food, amazing service, and the best friends. Scandalous night!

But that's just a taste, and what's one taste bud in a whole tongue? As Labar once said.., "take a look! It's in a book! The reading rainbow!" I recommend trying Bo's for all your needs. The food was el taste. The urinals fresh as may, awaiting your April dew. A stubborn leg, half of me wanted to stay the other half knew I must go home. So I Terry foxed home eagerly awaiting my next return. 9 manbuns out of 10.

  • I'm sorry, but when you've been producing albums for over a decade, and your long time fans are in their 30s and presumably have jobs to get to in the morning... why the heck would you start your set at 10:15pm on a Wednesday?! I bought a ticket only to see the band for less than an hour, because I had a meeting early the next morning. If TPC wants to pander to university age kids and hope they have the disposable cash to buy tickets, so be it. TPC makes beautiful tunes, but last night was the last time I'll see them in concert.

  • They were absolutely amazing! Lead singer jumped into the crowd and danced with us. They got us to jump at the same time. They really had a feel for the crowd and planned their set to really keep us going, but knew when to play a slower song like Favorite Food. They played a bunch from Champ, would've liked to have heard more from Forcefield, but overall they were amazing.

  • The concert was so sick!! All three bands were amazingly talented and kept the spirits high the entire time. It was awesome when Tokyo police club got us all to jump together and then when he just joined the audience and partied with us! The band members were all so nice and chill, they made the whole experience fun! It was a blast!

  • This is the fourth time I have seen Tokyo Police Club, and I would go 100 more times. They put on such an exciting show that keeps the entire crowd captivated and engaged start to finish. This particular concert was particularly special because they played their original album through. Very memorable, very worth it!

  • The show was great. Full house and energetic crowd. The opening group - We Were Promised Jetpacks - stole the show though....they should have been the headliner. Hoping that Crescent or Valley Bar bring We Were Promised Jetpacks back to Phoenix for the own show.

  • This show was amazing! The effects were great, the band was awesome, and they even stuck around after to help sell merchandise and sign autographs. My boyfriend and I got our vinyl signed by the band. Would definitely see these guys again live!
