Biography

  • AlunaGeorge is an English EDM duo from London, made up of Aluna Francis who takes care of vocals and songwriting and George Reid who is responsible for production and instrumentation.

The pair first crossed paths in 2009, when Reid remixed Francis’ previous band My Toys Like Me’s song “Sweetheart”. They had similar influences and a similar work ethic. “You Know You Like It” was their debut single, released as a digital download on April 20th 2012, which was followed by a vinyl released on June 11th 2012. It was the lead single from their first studio album, “Body Music”. It peaked at No. 55 on the UK Singles Chart in April 2013, as it was used in a Tesco advert. It received critical acclaim with Pitchfork Media labelling it as “Best New Music”. It was re-released on July 28th 2013 as a double A-side with the song “Bad Idea” and fortunately reached No. 39 on the UK Singles Chart, however, their first hit was in fact their world-renowned collaboration with Disclosure, “White Noise” that reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was after this that their debut full-length studio album “Body Music” was released under Island Records on July 26th 2013. It charted on an international level in eight countries, either side of the Atlantic.

The following year on June 16th 2014, they released a remix album entitled “Body Music Remixed” which was an interesting re-release and endeavour that AlunaGeorge embarked on. Aluna’s vocals have sometimes been described as “almost child-like” as well as being referred to as “sugar sweet” and “emotionally soulful and heart warming too”. Their genre is very much an experimental hip-hop, 90’s R&B and house” They cite influences from Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, James Taylor, Van Morrison, Aaliyah, and Flying Lotus as influences. They have collaborated with other artists such as Friends, Florence and the Machine, Baauer and Dirty Projectors.

Live reviews

  • AlunaGeorge

As a frequent concert goer in Portland, I was surprised that there was no wait for doors to open at 7. Naturally, my friend and I waited it out and were able to get to the front row. It was a little bit upsetting that the opener, Kiiara, apparently was changed out the last minute to another act. What I think was inconsiderate was that the venue never actually sent out an email saying that Kiiara had cancelled.

Besides that, the opening act was alright. Talented, but somewhat forgettable. Kiiara would have been a little more up our alleys, but c'est la vie.

However, Aluna's immense stage presence really made up for it all. Funny enough, we had seen her walking through North Park earlier in sweats and a T shirt but weren't sure if it was her. She was absolutely stunning. Her presence onstage, vocals, dancing, and connection with the crowd was unbeatable. I was a little bit disappointed that George didn't seem to be at this show and was wondering why. I know that he produces the music, but I thought that he would be with his bandmate as well. Another disappointment was that there was less songs performed off of Body Music, however Aluna's performance was amazing and all of the AG features in Flume songs/others were done perfectly. I understand that this is a bit of a weird time for a tour because Body Music was a long time ago and their new album is not out yet. Hopefully they'll be able to debut more new stuff once they go on tour with Sia, which is very soon.

Overall, great performance made up for the let down in the opening act.

  • When you hear AlunaGeorge, you instantly start to dance. When you hear AlunaGeorge live, you get an entire crowd singing, jumping and dancing, and it is the greatest experience ever.

Interestingly, the first time I heard AlunaGeorge, I wasn’t a fan, but through this urge to keep listening to more of their music, I eventually gave in. Right around “Attracting Flies” from their “Body Music” album, I was hooked. Consisting of Aluna Francis (vocalist and songwriter) and George Reid (producer and instrumentalist), the duo makes music that gives energy to even the most lethargic person. As soon as George starts the tracks, the entire crowd goes wild, and when Aluna starts in, the whole venue becomes deafening from the shouts. Both are completely feeding off the energy, with Aluna using the entire stage, moving back and forth so that every inch of the venue gets her attention. Plus, the presence of live drums instead of electronic tracks just ups the songs much, much more. To top that, Aluna’s voice is much better live than it is in the studio versions you get on itunes. Her higher pitched voice tends to sound a bit “whiny” in the studio version, whereas live you really get a chance to hear better fluidity to her voice.

The live versions have spoiled me. I still listen to AlunaGeorge on my itunes, but most times I feel like listening to them, its usually a video of their live sets.

  • AlunaGeorge created a storm in 2013 when their shining, shimmering music with high production values and unique vocal appeared to be a much needed middle ground between pop and dance. There is a wonderfully danceable quality to the likes of 'You Know You Like It' yet in the same way, vocalist Aluna Francis still has the ability to showcase her abilities without getting lost in an overpowering backing beat.

Production wizard George is completely entranced during the live experience yet the fans do not mind as he keeps the pace of this high quality operation to an exceptionally good level. They have enjoyed a handful of hits in their short career and the crowd sings back 'Attracting Flies' and their Disclosure collaboration 'White Noise' in force. It is album tracks such as 'Outlines' that demonstrate the band's affection for the 90's house era and these influences remain present throughout. Paying homage to the decade in their encore, they cover the classic 'This Is How We Do It' by Montell Jordan, demonstrating the impressive outcome of their collaboration.

  • Awesome show, as always. So cool to see her at this venue, Paradise is always a good time. Crowd was mostly mellow, with a few under 21's that felt the need to push through the crown to get closer. Set was great, solid mix of new and old stuff. Thanks for making the trip out here, we love you!

  • Not a concert. First time I've been disappointed with a concert and I go to about 25 a year.. maybe it was my mistake to think it'd be a concert rather than a club night with a short appearances from alunageorge at completely wrong time to what was advertised....

  • AlunaGeorge was great. The sound at the venue seemed off. The opening act was supposed to be Kiiara and she never showed. I felt this should have been posted somewhat for the guests that were looking forward to her act as well.
