Biography

  • Hailing from Seneca, South Carolina, US, Needtobreathe are a christian rock band, mixing southern rock with folk influences, achieving a sound similar to that of Mumford and Sons, The Fray and The Civil Wars.

The band began life after two brothers, William Stanley "Bear" Rinehart III (lead vocals, guitar, piano, organ, harmonica) and Nathaniel Bryant "Bo" Rinehart (lead guitar, banjo, mandolin, backing vocals) started performing together in their hometown, mostly at coffee houses at Furman University. Soon they were joined by Seth Bolt (bass, mandolin, backing vocals), who had studied recording engineering at Full Sail University, using his home studio to record the band's first releases. The album, "The Feature" and EPs "Fire" and "Turnaround" helped gain the band attention, alongside their extensive touring, eventually attracting the attention of Atlantic/Lava Records, an affiliate with Universal, signing the band in 2005.

The band recorded their first album, "Daylight" in the UK, released on April 4th, 2006. Their first radio single was "You Are Here" which was originally featured on their "Fire" EP. This was followed by 2007's "The Heat," which pushed Needtobreathe's music to a wider audience and also receiving critical acclaim. They were nominated for two Dove Awards in 2009 for their song "Signature of Divine (Yahweh)" for Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, as well as for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year. In 2009, their song "Washed by the Water" went on to win the award for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year. This success helped to establish the band as one of the biggest new names in the christian rock scene.

It was with their third album that Needtobreathe cemented their place in the scene, with 2009's "The Outsider" reaching number 20 on the Billboard 200. 2011's "The Reckoning" took this further, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200. The first single from the album, "Slumber" reached number 26 on the Christian Rock Chart. Following this release, "Rivers in the Wasteland" came out in April, 2014, debuting at number three in the Billboard 200 and number one on the Christian Albums Chart, selling 49,000 copies in the first week.

Live reviews

  • NEEDTOBREATHE

Christian rockers Needtobreathe have released a lot of material in a relatively short amount of time, with their discography now standing at 5 since the debut 'Daylight' in 2006. Clearly dedicated to both the recording process as well as the touring schedule, this desire to continuously develop their sound and test drive new material means their gigs always come with an element of surprise.

The audience is ready for a show and the group is more than obliged to offer one. The boys come onstage visibly pleased with the warm reaction and take to their instruments for the introductory track 'Devil's Been Talkin''. They speak fondly with the crowd during tracks about the inspiration to the music and their faith which of course has had a constant effect on their music.

There are large cheers for crowd favourites including 'Washed by the Water' and 'State I'm In'. The band are so enthusiastic by the final tones of 'The Outsiders' about their music that the audience almost feel like they have been to church as the cheers are of biblical proportions.

  • Needtobreathe is a Rock/Americana/singersongwriter/Godloving/rumpshaking band. I have seen them 5 times in the last 3 years. Each performance has been electric and intimate regardless of the setting or crowd. They are open about their love of God but definitely not your generic watered down religious crap. It's perfect driving across the country with the widows down, camping out with some friends enjoying a cold brew, or grilling out for your favorite holiday music. Actually, it's good jams for about any setting. Their lyrics are honest and heart-felt. If you haven't heard of them before I encourage you to go ahead and get the whole catalog. These guys haven't put out a bad record yet. Anyway just like the name says you needtobelistening to these guys. You can thank me later. :)

  • Absolutely incredible. This was my third time seeing them, but this was easily their best show.

I LOVED the introductions made, the old videos shown, the Max Headroom reference, and the throwback medley. Been a fan for nearly 9 years, so the throwbacks were especially surprising and nostalgia pressing.

Also loved Parachute as an opener. Great match with a great performance.

    All around fantastic show.

  • Great show all the way around.

To start with Matt Maeson was excellent! Led off the night with a 7 songs and then was gone less than 10 minutes before Needtobreathe took to the stage.

The songs were well done and the had the crowd on their feet the entire time. The covers they did were spot on.

Can't wait to see them again. This was my 6th time seeing them in concert and they NEVER disappoint!

  • This was the second time we have seen Needtobreathe and it was incredible! The first time was last year at the Armory in Minneapolis and we went to see Johnnyswim, not knowing who Needtobreathe was at the time. Crazy, right? The concert in Omaha was superb, the acoustic set was amazing and the crowd was on fire! Thanks for the fantastic entertainment, you guys are incredibly talented and a joy to watch!

  • Awesome show!! This is my second time seeing this band in concert and they were just as good-if not better than the first time I saw them. I loved the atmosphere they created and their voices sound amazing live! They played to a decent sized crowd and yet they made the concert personal and unique. Love this band and what they stand for. I can't wait for the chance to see them in concert again!

  • The weather ended up being horrible. Like a bucket of water falling from the sky for a couple hours.

So the venue took the band off the stage , although, they probably could've played some more songs. After 45 mins, NTB decided to come out and do 4 acoustic songs. That was cool! Not an experience you would normally get! Only ended up being 7 songs total, but i enjoyed myself

  • This was my 6th time to see NEEDTOBREATHE live! They are the most consistent, humble and hardest working band in rock music! Every time I seem them, their show is different and new. They have a great sound and a great way of expressing themselves through their music. Truly genuine artists! I will see them again!

  • What an amazing show. Bear knocked out a Bucket List by doing House of the Rising Sun, live. This is not a band touring to expose their music, they are playing music. Two ventures into the GA admission area. Lights, and an acoustic set. Bo and Bear earned their time off with this as the last All the Feels Tour stop.

  • Excellent show! This was my second time seeing them, the last time being in 2011. They put on one of the best shows and last night was no exception. They have a lot of love for their fans and played new songs and old. Their show production was on point, the lights and video being especially creative and artistic.
