Biography

  • Willow Smith (born October 31, 2000) is an American pop and R&B singer, best known as the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and for her single “Whip My Hair”, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Born into life in the public eye as the daughter of high-profile celebrities Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith made her performance debut alongside her father in “I Am Legend”. This appearance proved to be the first in a string of movie contributions, with the young actress later featuring in “Kit Kitteredge: An American Girl”, “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”, and “Merry Madagascar”. It was announced in June 2010 Willow Smith was in the process of recording a solo album, which was led by the single “Whip My Hair”. The track peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, went platinum and ultimately introduced the singer to a national audience.

Willow Smith’s subsequent single “21st Century Girl” was promoted by an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, after which she released the single “Fireball” with Nicki Minaj which failed to chart. “Fireball” became Smith’s first single to miss out on the Billboard 200, however aided the singer inking a deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. In May 2012 the single and video “Do It Like Me (Rockstar)” was issued, followed by “I Am Me” in July 2012. In a collaboration with DJ Fabrega entitled “Melodic Chaotic”, Willow Smith released a pair of singles “The Intro” and “Summer Fling”. The latter of which earned significant criticism for its mature themes and fake British accent. In November 2014 Smith officially issued her debut EP “3”, which was promoted by a show in New York City featuring SZA and brother Jaden Smith.

Live reviews

  • Willow Smith

At only 13 years old, Willow Smith has already starred in a blockbuster hit with ‘I Am Legend,’ put out tracks that hit the Top 40 on the Billboard charts and has won awards for her musical talents. Sure, it does help to have some famous parents -- Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith -- and a brother, Jaden, who’s also a star in his own right. But the past few years have proven that she’s not just riding her family’s coat tails, and she wants to put her own stamp on the world.

Most of first heard about her musical aspirations with the release of her major hit, ‘Whip My Hair,’ inspiring everyone -- young and old -- to let those strands fly everywhere. She later released a series of singles and even worked with Nicki Minaj on ‘Fireball’ and more recently Jaden on ‘5.’ While she’s been putting out the singles, her young age despite maturity in front of the public eye didn’t bode as well with a specific audience as she was not necessarily the girl you’ll catch rock out on the Disney Channel. Her debut album has yet to release.

Despite whatever delays there are on the album, there’s no doubt that this girl can sing. Performing on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ the White House and the UK leg of Justin Bieber’s world tour, she proves time and time again that her pint size won’t stop her massive voice to come out. And even though she has since chopped off all her hair and can no longer whip it back and forth, her recent performance of ‘Domino,’ a duet with R&B breakout songstress SZA, shows that her pipes don’t lie, and we’ll be seeing more from this girl real soon.

  • As the daughter of Will Smith, and younger sister of child actor Jayden Smith, Willow had some pretty big shoes to fill, but she has done so with conviction and enthusiasm. She began her career in 2007 as an actress, and launched into the music industry 3 years later with her hit 'Whip my Hair'. The single went platinum in the US, and I can't think of anyone who wouldn't now be familiar with the catchy hook of the chorus.

Watching a performance from Willow is incredibly refreshing. Experiencing her youthful energy and passion paired with incredible talent is something that you don't get to witness very often. Throughout the performance she didn't stop jumping around, and was intent on getting the audience involved in her performance, singing lines of her song, then holding out the microphone to encourage everyone to join in. She even sang some songs with a head mic rather than hand held to allow her to perform some pretty cool dance routines.

Seeing Willow perform on a large stage was great, because it allowed the lighting and set design to be extravagant and full of energy to match the calibre of the teenager's performance. It's not just her enthusiastic performance that makes the show however, she has a wonderfully mature and powerful voice that she appears to have learned to control very well. Definitely an artist worth going to see live!

  • Saw Willow at the Danforth Music Hall for NXNE. She was amazing! Couldn't believe how comfortable she seemed, with so much energy the whole time (at 14!). The only thing that sucked was that she came on 10 minutes late and only played for 20 minutes... Pretty disappointing considering a lot of the audience was young and paid $30 for a 20 minute set. But who knows what happened for it to be cut off like that.

I feel like people would have cheered more for an encore but we were all so surprised when it was over. She kind of just said bye! and ran off stage so we didn't know if it was really over or not.

In any case, it was great while it lasted!
