Recent tour reviews

  • Aoife O'Donovan

Last night's show at Hackney Empire from I'm With Her was eagerly anticipated after their gig at Union Chapel last May and the webcast from Golden Gate Park as part of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2018.

The three band members - Aoife O'Donovan Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz - each have successful solo and band careers.

They have one album out, an EP and a song released in January. Gathered round a single microphone and trading instruments throughout the show, they played the bulk of their collective recorded output, selections from their solo records, a medley of bluegrass tunes (Watkins and Jarosz are both award winning players), and a smattering of covers of which a fantastic version of Joni Mitchell's Carey was the pick.

Sara Watkins' fiddle playing was a highlight for me.

The closing pair - Overland (with audience singling) and Muddy Waters emphasised the harmony singing as well as fine playing.

I'm With Her came back for a double encore of George Harrison's Behind That Locked Door and Vampire Weekend's Hannah Hunt.

First show of a European tour. Worth many times the ticket price.

  • Amazing rhythm and vocal sensibility - you feel like you're on a cloud when listening to her voice. You can tell which tunes are hers, with their Shawn Colvin-like twang, and her simple, but poignant storytelling style.

  • Amazing show. Wouldn't have missed it for the world, would go again in a heartbeat.

The musicality of these ladies from Im With Her never ceases to blow me away.
