Live reviews

  • Suuns

Canada’s Suuns are a band who pulse, throb and drive motorik rhythms right into your heart – and where better to do that than in the white hot heat of the live arena? Formed by Ben Shemie, Joe Yarmush, Liam O'Neill and Max Henry in 2006, they took a few years to release their debut album and it wasn’t until 2010 that Zeroes QC, released on Secretly Canadian, was heard. A dark and brooding record mixing prog and Krautrock, it pulled off the tricky task of sounding like a band who had been doing this sort of thing for years. Following it up with Images Du Futur, Suuns added some wig-outs to their repertoire, aiming to push their sound beyond any borders they may have inadvertently created for themselves. Suuns really get into their music when they’re onstage; this is head-down groove music, each member getting lost in the song as the band lunges through the heartbeat pulse of ‘2020’, the brooding drone of ‘Minor Work’ is intensified by Ben Shemie’s mumbled vocal and traditional set closer ‘Arena’ is an explosive mix of electronics and sterling guitar work. Sure, you can listen to the records but why not go out and listen to this music where it was meant to be heard.

  • Suuns, who for me are without a doubt one of the most intriguing experimental guitar bands around today, are an absolute treat to see perform live. Hailing from Canada, the band’s wonderful guitar riffs and surging bass lines have a slightly industrial feel to them, and lead singer Ben Shemie‘s whispering vocals weave through their entire set, adding an ominous threatening ambiance to the whole experience. Song after song builds in intensity and engulfs the audience in layers of throbbing intensity, causing everyone to bob, sway and head bang along with the distorted looping layers the band carve out. Playing songs from their debut album, ‘Zeroes QC’, as well as material from their more recent release, ‘Images du Futur’, the band are a well rehearsed and professional outfit. It is a privilege to see them reconstruct songs like ‘Pie IX’ and ‘Armed For Peace’ live onstage, and their performance encourages you to appreciate each and every element of the pulsating vibes they produce. ‘2020’ was a particular highlight for me because the rise and fall of that guitar riff just sounds so undeniably awesome.

  • I've seen five pretty awesome performing acts in the last few weeks, and Suuns were by far the best. It felt like they were there to be the music itself, it was as the Casbah in San Diego which is an extremely intimate venue, if you spit beer it would be right onto the band. There, they redefined what a band means to me. They were like this sensory campfire that everyone in the room huddled around and got warm at. Their music is great on their albums, but live is thousands of times better. You start to feel more alive, or differently than you were. Some part of you splashes onto someone else, and everyone else onto you. Like you all become those people who were there when the Suuns changed the fabric of the universe real fast and then continued on with their tour.

  • I came across Suunns quite recently and felt in love at firsts seconds. On stage, I found myself hypnotised listening to 4 fucking talented musicians playing while creating a kind of fetish atmosphere. Hope to see them again many many times.

  • Seeing/ hearing Suuns @ DroneFest @ Basillica Hudson, NY (4/25/15) was amazing! They just droned, no singing, just constant, trance-inducing drone; creating a Magickal atmosphere for those of us who attended.
