Biography

  • Blending Golden Age rap with Arabic tones and Egyptian mythology, IAM became France's biggest hip hop act, influencing the sound of a burgeoning rap scene in their home country, whilst also competing with the best of US hip hop.

After spending time alongside a number of New York rappers, Akhenaton brought these inspirations back with him, upon returning to Marseille, France in 1988. Teaming up with producer Imhotep, DJ Khéops, Shurik'n, Kephren and Freeman, IAM was formed shortly after, quickly setting to work on creating tracks. Despite having little money, they managed to record their debut mixtape, "IAM Concept," which helped land them a stint on Madonna's "Blonde Ambition Tour."

IAM's debut full-length, "…De La Planète Mars," appeared in 1991, being one of the first rap albums to be released by a French group. Their talent was clear, with their second effort, 1993's "Ombre Est Lumière" proving they had the ability to become a successful act. The record featured the hit single, "Le Mia," helping to find them mainstream attention, despite their staunch political views. After the release, the group embarked on various solo ventures, taking time out from IAM.

In 1997, they traveled to the US to begin work on their third album, with "L'ècole du Micro D'argent" surfacing that same year. The album was hugely successful, reaching the number three spot in France. The album became a milestone of the French Rap scene, setting the standard for artists to come. After this success, the members of IAM returned to solo projects, with Akhenaton even turning his attentions to cinema.

Four years later, "Revoir un Printemps" appeared, a record that established the quality of IAM once again to hip hop fans in Europe and the US, offering a refreshing sound to a genre that had become stale in the US. Method Man and Redman then lent their rhymes to an IAM track, on the single, "Noble Art." Subsequent releases continued to find chart success, making IAM France's top hip hop act. A number one album was found in 2013's "Arts Martiens," proving the act still had the potential to deliver hits. Regardless of commercial success, IAM helped set the template for French rap, translating the musical style to a new audience.

Live reviews

  • IAM

Hailing from Marseille, the French hip-hop group known as IAM consists of Phillippe Fragione (aka Akhenaton), Geoffroy Mussard (aka Shurik’n), Eric Mazel (aka Khéops), Pascal Perez (aka Imhotep) and François Mendy (aka Kephren). IAM stands for Invasion Arrivée de Mars`translating to Invasion from Mars, but more importantly the group has blurred a lot of barriers by incorporating themes of Africa, Ancient Egypt and Islam into their music. Because of this, they have been able to express their thoughts and opinions; something that music is all about. Their stage production is fairly simple, with a DJ running the tracks in the back and a background of a city surrounding them. However, there is nothing that compares to their chemistry of being on stage together. As their first song starts up, each one enters the stage for each of their verse. Once they all reach the stage it becomes very obvious that these men are brought together for one thing, the expressions of their thoughts through the unifying act of music. As a person who does not speak the French language, it didn’t matter that they only rapped in French. The emotions that come through are very obvious, whether you understand every word or not.

  • When you're from Marseille and you've never had the chance to see IAM Live and you hear they come to London, it's a no brainer: you buy a Ticket!

As the tickets were Sold Out in a couple of days, I'd dare to say I wasn't the only one thinking along the same lines...

The show was as expected from these living Legends of French Hip-Hop: Amazing!

A 2hrs set (which, considering their last London gig was 26 years ago was the least they could do...) packed with classics, which mainly made the crowd resonate when they were from their most famous album "L'Ecole du Micro d'Argent". Special mention on that note for "L'Empire du Coté Obscur" with Lightsabers to spice it all up.

Another once actually for "Je Danse le MIA", with a funky touch and the appropriate outfit for Akhenaton!

The band was clearly touched by their welcome and the overwhelming French community that exists on the Island so I'm sure we'll see them again sooner than we think, and that's for the best!

  • Amazing concert, such a pleasure to see and listen to these guys that represented such a fun part of my adolescence. Great energy, big smiles, and a big positive vibe from Marseille! The set was just perfect and their rap quality as good as 27 years ago!
