Rizzle Kicks are an English hip hop duo from Brighton consisting of Jordan Stephens Harley Alexander-Sule, both attendes of the Brit school.
The pair originally met at Brit School, whilst studying different courses. Jordan was working on a media project sampling music from some of his favourite artists which included Gorillaz and Lily Allen when he asked Harley, a theatre student, to sing over the top. The duo soon realised their musical styles fit well and began to invest time into the duo they called Rizzle Kicks named after green rizzlas and a mutual love of football.
They started to gain attention on Youtube after uploading demos for tracks including 'Miss Cigarette' and the now recognisable 'Down With The Trumpets'. Both working full time jobs at the time, they devoted as much of their free time and energy into promoting their sound before getting signed to Island Records in 2010. They were supported from Radio 1 from the very early days including being invited to play the Big Weekend in 2011 which then earned them an invite to headline the Introducing stage at Reading & Leeds that year. They are now a staple on the UK festival circuit playing the likes of Glastonbury, Wakestock and T in the Park.
Their debut album 'Stereo Typical' managed to break the top five despite being released the same week as two British heavyweights Florence the Machine and Professor Green. It featured three top 10 singles 'Down With The Trumpets', 'When I Was A Youngster' and 'Mama Do The Hump', the latter peaking at #2. The follow up 'Roaring 20s' came in 2013 and peaked at #3 on the album charts, a new high for the duo. It also featured two more hit singles, 'Lost Generation' and 'Skip To The Good Bit'.
Read morewhere do i begin? the atmosphere in that field that night was absolutely amazing, and that just added to the fact that it was my first ever concert. the stage was bigger than i imagined, and so was the crowd that happened to be very enthusiastic when it came to seeing rizzle kicks and their lovely voices and well danced dance moves.
the thrill washed over me as they walked onto the stage, their hands in the air as they waved down at the masses and masses of people who had waited patiently for many minutes since their support act had taken the spotlight.
"woo, aah!" is all you heard as the first song started to play: "down with the trumpets". in the 3 minutes the song played for, all you could hear was screams and song lyrics being blurted out from all directions, nothing but figures jumping up and down with half a face of smile spread across their mouths. but it definitely wasn't just the audience jumping around and waving their hands about, jordan and harley both sprung about the stage, keeping their vocals on point. what can i say; jordan and harley both put the "kick" in rizzle kicks.
