Biography

  • Hailing from Princeton, New Jersey, US, Mary Chain Carpenter has been offering listeners her sensitive brand of country pop, tinged with coffeehouse folk since the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, finding praise from critics and fans alike.

Carpenter was given her first guitar by her mother, who had picked up the instrument during the 1960s folk explosion, passing down the instrument to allow her daughter’s enthusiasm for music to flourish. Carpenter played music throughout her high school years, but it was a move to Washington D.C., US, that sparked further interest in a music career, having become involved with the city’s folk scene in the mid-‘70s. After travelling round Europe for a year, Carpenter returned to study at Brown University, where she graduated as an American Civilisation major.

After graduating, Carpenter became more and more involved with the local folk scene, soon developing her repertoire and teaming up with guitarist John Jennings. The demo tapes landed Carpenter an audition with Columbia Records in 1987, who soon signed the young starlet to their roster. Before long, “Hometown Girl,” her debut album was released. “State of the Heart” followed in 1989, which garnered Carpenter a growing fan base, bolstered by her two Top Ten singles in “Never Had It So Good” and “Quittin’ Time.”

This success was in defiance of country radio stations’ reluctance to play her songs that were often progressive and dealing with feminist subject matters. Yet with “Shooting Straight in the Dark,” this was about to change, and Carpenter broke down barriers that soon led to her breakthrough success in 1992 with “Come on Come On.” Her country-folk found huge popularity this time around, earning her a string of Top Ten hits, as well as the number one “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” eventually selling over two million copies of her fourth record.

“Stones In the Road” in 1994 almost equaled this success, whilst her following releases continued to find critical acclaim and high sales figures. In 2004, “Between Here and Gone” featured the addition of pianist Matt Rollings, with Carpenter again changing tact through her festive release, “Come Darkness, Come Light: Twelve Songs of Christmas” in 2008. Always progressing, 2012’s “Ashes and Roses” featured a collection of songs entirely self-written, later pushing boundaries in 2013 when she teamed up with Grammy-winning arranger Vince Mendoza, creating an orchestral albums of songs from her back-catalog.

Live reviews

  • Mary Chapin Carpenter

UK resident (originally from Australia), Emily Barker, opened for the show at Boise Idaho's Egyptian Theatre downtown last night on Thurs., June 28th. Her crisp vocals cut through the theatre with such beauty and clarity, and her musicianship on the guitar, harmonica, and piano no doubt made many new fans this evening.

Chapin performed flawlessly with her band members consisting of a drummer, bassist, pianist and guitar/mandolin player. Emily Barker stepped in for backing vocals and tambourine on several songs, too. Mary Chapin performed many favorites and a few new songs from the most recent 2 albums. Over this Summer's tour, she is celebrating 30 years of recording, and I have been a supporter of her music for at least 25 of those years. Well, "supporter" would be an understatement; she's the musical love of my life...haha.

I'm grateful she is continuing to tour and make records, as I know it can't go on forever. I'm cherishing what concerts I'm still able to attend, because, as Chapin said during the show last night, sometimes we really need to come together and connect to the music in person and not just digitally in the form of cd's and mp3's. She's right, too. There's really nothing like it.

  • Mary Chapin Carpenter's name is synonymous with excellence! Her appearance is always toned down, after all, her voice is what sells her. That raw, slightly smokey voice gets me every time!

Her sense of normalcy lends to her trademark. Nothing flashy needed ! The crowd goes crazy as her songs are timeless, catchy and always on point. You will be hard pressed to not find people enthusiastically dancing or simply sitting, some with a tear running down their cheek.

One particular stellar performance was Mary singing Down at The Twist and Shout at a benefit concert for FarmAid. Mary is also a supporter of causes which lends to the heartfelt side of her that she exudes in everything she sings.

Although a born "Jersey Girl" she has taken the country music scene by storm since branching out of her small club venues onto the big stage. Today she is back to the more intimate venues which suit her well. She is one to engage her audience and really bring you into the song. I run through a gamut of emotion at her shows. From Passionate Kisses to Shut Up and Kiss Me, you can't leave wanting more and more while dancing to the car !

  • It was an excellent evening. Mary Chapin is a consummate professional and artist. I believe it is from these experiences and knowledge that she was able to trust and tell us, the audience, her fans, of the passing of John Jennings. It was a tough and a loving thing to do.

I've seen Mary Chapin in concert several times now and I will be in attendance again in Eau Claire, WI on Tuesday - I wouldn't miss it for the world. I've been aware of Mary Chapin and a fan for decades and the quality of her concerts have always been high.

I love this woman singer/songwriter, musician, artist, whole person!

  • Balladeer with a side of sassy. Ever timeless and tender, last night's concert delivered the warmth and complexity that her voice & master guitar talents could offer to eager fans.

I believe my first concert with MCC was same August night 1996 in NJ with Trisha Yearwood as her opening act. Last night I watched her sing all my favorites with ethos and accuracy. The members of her band (with Emily Baker as back up) seemed to be having as much fun as we were. Nothing like an intimate night with MCC in sumner.

See you in November at Keswick in Glenside.

  • Well worth going to see Mary Chapin is looking well after her recent health problems

She is still a class act though she is older now and at times may struggle to put the same energy into some songs

Passionate kisses being a classic example of this now more a ballad than a high energy number

Still good digs at Donald Trump on the number I feel lucky

And her little anecdote before the song Oh Rosetta was good over

All a good night out great atmosphere well worth the money

    Long may she continue

  • Mary never disappoints! We waited months for her arrival in Boise tickets tucked away at Will Call. Second row on the end, we laughed, we cried, we lip synched every precious lyric savoring every succulent syllable.

We love Mary and her band and adore how she honors each of them. My daughter and I first saw her nearly 15 go and every lyrics and melody from Mary articulates our deepest dreams, hopes and hurts. Keep coming back, Mary.

  • This woman makes love to me with her voice every time I listen, which is at the very least once per day. A warmth that soaks into my every moment when I hear that beautiful voice telling me that there is hope even after a loss such that haunts my life. From the bottom of my heart Mary I thank you for being there for me Arthur

  • I love the music of Mary Chapin Carpenter, and last night was wonderful. The Parker Playhouse is a lovely small venue. Not a bad seat in the House! I will look for other concerts coming to the Parker Playhouse.

Mary Chapin Carpenter sang old favorites, but changed up the arrangements. Her voice is strong and beautiful.

  • I've seen Chapin in concert several times and she NEVER disappoints! Was grateful she made a stop in Omaha for the first time in quite some time. The band was stellar, she played a nice mix of favorites and new material. For me, the highlight was the final song of the encore, just her lovely voice and guitar.
