Biography

  • Formed at the turn of the millennium, All That Remains, from Springfield, Massachusetts have a handful of studio albums to their name, together with a live CD/DVD and have managed sales of over a million units internationally.

ATR formed in 2000 and quickly wrote their debut album "Behind Silence and Solitude", which was later released on March 26th 2002 through Prosthetic Records. Featuring on the album were re-recordings of three demos from 1999, “Follow”, “Shading” and “Erase”. “This Darkened Heart” is the second studio album by the band and it was released on March 23rd 2004. It was produced by Adam Dutkiewicz, of Killswitch Engage.

All That Remains hit their stride on their third album, “The Fall of Ideals”, released on July 11th 2006, and was again produced by Adam Dutkiewicz. The album gave the band their first chart success, reaching number 75 in the Billboard 200 charts. Two years later, the album had sold upwards of 175,000 units. The song “Six” which was featured the video game Guitar Hero II, and “This Calling” was available as downloadable content for Rockband. It’s also used as the lead track on the original soundtrack of Saw III.

On September 16th 2008, the band released their fourth studio album “Overcome”, which is the only album of theirs not produced by Adam Dutkiewicz. Two of the album's tracks “Two Weeks” and “Chiron” became available content for Rock Band on September 9th 2008. The album did even better than it’s prequel, reaching #16 on the Billboard 200, selling over 200,000 copies. They released three singles from the album, “Forever In Your Hands”, “Frozen” and “Days Without”. Following a couple of international tours, and heading back into the studio, the band released their fourth studio album “For We Are Many” on October 12th 2010. It went on to peak at number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 7 in the Canadian Albums Chart.

Their following release, “A War You Cannot Win”, the sixth studio instalment, continued the success that they were already experiencing with the album going to #13 in the Billboard 200 Chart. It has sold upwards of 115,000 units to date.

Live reviews

  • All That Remains

All That Remains have the kind of force behind their musical performances that allows them to shake rooms with their loud, heavy guitar playing, double bass drum playing, and screaming in your face type vocal style.

Two things that a metal band must be when playing live is heavy and fierce, and All That Remains definitely accomplishes this task. Although All That Remains often has heavy dissonant sounds, they also incorporate a very melodic style of playing to their music as well. Their bass player, Jeanne Sagan, will sometimes sing in incredibly harsh, high-pitched and dissonant screams, while the lead singer, Philip Labonte, will sing in a more melodic voice during the chorus, but will often breakout into a complete rage, bellowing his vocals off like deep growls of an angered beast. The guitarist, Oli Herbert, has very angular style of playing music that consists of shredding solos in inharmonic scales.

The band definitely has the perception of a tough guy persona with all the members dressed in black and banging their heads to the fast and loud rhythm of the metal music they are blasting. Philip Labonte is fierce on stage, running all around and jumping up on the drum platform to belt out his lyrics. The crowd is just as excited and enthralled into the performance by showing displays of crowd surfing and starting up mosh pits. The band is also very acknowledgeable of the audience by frequently checking up on the audience during the performance to see how they are doing. The stage theatrics at their concert is also spectacular with bright strobe lights violently flashing over their stage that is filled with a layer of smoke.

All That Remains definitely knows how to present an epic rock show that is likely to melt your face off with their intense music and leave you absolutely ecstatic after their performance.

  • All That Remains seem to be on tour constantly, and one would imagine this would leave the band worn out and lacklustre onstage whereas in reality it seems to invigorate the band to make every single evening the best live performance so far. Energised by their devoted fan base who's cheers could lift the roof before the lights go down, the Massachusetts metal heads appear onstage and tear into 'Now Let Them Tremble' which drowns out the screams.

Running through the fan favourites, there is mass moshing and head banging during 'Six' as Philip Labonte encourages to lose themselves and go all out for the band. They tear their instruments apart with such ferocity you wonder how the guitars have not spontaneously combust by third track 'The Last Time'.

The crowd jumps in unison for 'Some of the People, All of the Time' during an extended drumming solo before a massive breakdown kicks in and relieves the anticipation. The audience and band muster their final energy for an all cannons blazing version of 'This Calling' and the band exits ready to do it all again in 24 hours.

  • All That Remains tour so often, it would be crazy for a fan to not have seen them live yet! Every time I've seen them, Oli walks around and greets fans! Great guy, although people thought he was Rob Zombie when they opened for him at Krrofest in Sioux Falls, SD! These guys put out so much energy in their shows! So watch out for mosh pits and crowd surfers! They sound just like on the albums and always play old stuff along with their newest releases! You will not be disappointed to see ATR!
