  • Phoenix

You're gotta love the French ! I don't know if they've always been as energetic as this or if it's the singer Thomas Mars' new marriage to director Sofia Coppola that's gotten him all revved up, but, to quote Icona Pop, I love it. I have seen Phoenix twice in concert, once at a festival (T in the park) and once at the Metropolis in Montreal. Some bands are terrible at festival settings but amazing when it's just them. But not Phoenix ! They give soooo much energy in their live performance that you can't help but scream even louder than you thought you could as an acknowledgement.

I saw them when they were touring on their Bankrupt! album, which most fans and critics agree isn't nearly as good as Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. They played the 90% of the latter and 60% of Bankrupt! So fans who weren't familiar with it weren't disappointed. And they even played a couple of old songs like Consolation Prizes ! The playlist was very well crafted so as to give a mellow break for the crowd and the band. They opened with Entertainment and played Love Like a Sunset in which Thomas actually left the stage and gave way to the other musicians. He also played an entire song standing in the crowd (I actually helped hold him up hehe) as well as an acoustic version of Countdown (Sick for the big sun) ! Just when you thought they might collapse on stage they kept giving more and more ! Without a doubt, go see them. P.S interesting fact: the 2 members of Daft Punk used to be in a band with Phoenix's bassist called Darlin' ! Everything turned out so well !

  • Though they really broke on the scene with their hit album, Wolfgang Amadeus (2009), they should really be appreciated based on the catchy songs that you may not know.

Call it alternative rock, synthpop, or new wave, when listening to Phoenix, you will call it great fun. The French based band provides a perfect mixture of poppy percussion, soulful guitar, and perfectly utilized synthesizers and none of this is lost when appreciating them live. With a stage filled with talent, you'll notice the four band members (Thomas Mars- Vocals; Deck d'Arcy- Bass, keyboards; Laurent Brancowitz- Guitar, keyboards; Christian Mazzalai- Guitar) accompanied by a few others providing tour support. I mention the tour support because what will inevitably catch your eye is the energetic drumming done by Swedish drummer, Thomas Hedlund. Thomas is a one-man show but he is a perfect addition for the enjoyable performance.

Whether you're a long-time fan or are new to their music, you will bob your head and tap your foot along with the exciting, rhythmic pattern that is Phoenix.

*Cool fact: Before joining Phoenix, Laurent Brancowitz on guitar, previously started a band known as Darlin' which he formed with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Bangalter and de Homem-Christo later formed Daft Punk).

  • These guys played one of the best setlists I've heard, (although do I wish they would include something from the album Alphabetical,) and they sounded great. I knew the encore was for sure coming at the end, since they hadn't played 1901 yet, but it was still really exciting for me. We got to hear a really pretty stripped-down version of Countdown among other things, and also got some fun crowdsurfing action from Thomas.

Something else notable was that the pit was the most wholesome one I've ever experienced. Nobody was pushing or shoving very much, and everyone was surprisingly polite, though there was still a plenty of energy. You could tell everyone was just there to have a good time and enjoy the music together.

Overall, seeing one of my favorite bands live for the first time was all that I'd hoped it would be, and more

  • Do you know that moment when you hear a song for the first time and think, "I need to know who's playing that"? Of course you have. Anyone with a pulse has had this feeling. What's even better is when you look up the band for the first time, find their album, and love it from start to finish. Few artist have what I call "a perfect album" but Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus is most definitely one of them. Hearing them live for the first time was like meeting someone new and knowing right away that you're going to be close friends. I went as far as to buy a record player and sound system just so I can enjoy their vinyls! I've been to three concerts of theirs so far and plan on going to many more.

  • These guys really know how to put on a show. Despite speaking to the audience fewer than five times during the show, the energy was through the roof the whole time. Everyone at the venue was dancing the entire evening. I wasn't sure how well their music would translate live, however I was more than surprised by how excellent they sounded. I would definitely recommend going to a show if you're looking for a really fun event. They put on a great performance, and I would absolutely go to another show if I had the opportunity.

  • This concert was so amazing. Phoenix did not disappoint!! I love a band that is so confident in their playlist that they play their popular songs right off the bat!! It was like watching a big stadium show in a little venue. The crowd was amazing. They sang every song, even the new ones that came out 2 days before the concert. I was told that it was not sold out. Which I can't imagine, This place was packed. I don't know where they would put more people. I really hope The Phoenix returns to Phoenix some time soon.

  • Phoenix were a blast. My friends and I got a spot right in the center in front of the soundboard.. perfect spot. With proper ear protection it would have been perfect, but that's splitting hairs. The energy was amazing, the song choices were great, and the theme and the light show were unique and very entertaining. It's obvious they love what they do and put a lot of time into making the experience great for their loving fans. Great time.

  • I just saw them open for Beck in Costa Mesa, CA (USA) tonight 8/9/23 and I never heard of them before. Now, I will be seeking out all their albums. They are incredible and hit a sweet spot with me because their sound and songwriting and their chemistry on stage was amazing. The full-video background was fully used by them on this Beck tour and it added greatly to the show. If anyone has not seen Phoenix - DO NOT MISS them on this tour!

  • It’s the second time I’ve seen Phoenix live and it was even better this time! They are amazing live, the setlist is always spot on, they deliver the coolest visuals and are very charismatic. Thomas Mars is a huge fan of crowdsurfing so look ou for the extra long red LED mic cord and you know it’s going to happen soon!

If you are a fan of the band DONT miss out on the opportunity to see them perform in front of your eyes.

  • I've been fans of Phoenix for about five years now and this was the most incredible concert I've ever been to. The lighting for the show is incredible, and Thomas Mars has the best energy! They played for about an hour and a half, and their encore included him sitting on the gate in first row (I was in the third row, my heart swept!). If they're in your area, BUY THE FREAKING TICKETS. You won't ever regret it.
