Biography

  • Pinback is an American indie pop and progressive music group, formed in 1999 by Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow, hailing from San Diego, California, U.S.

Deriving their name from a character in the 1974 film “Dark Star”, Pinback was formed as a part time side-project of former Three Mile Pilot member Armistead Burwell Smith IV and former Thingy member Rob Crow. Pinback’s earliest recordings, made on Smith's home computer, were recorded with Three Mile Pilot drummer Tom Zinsor and featured a host of audio samples from the “Dark Star” film. With the band’s debut self-titled album hotly tipped as one of the finest indie-pop records of the year, a bidding war ensued that led the album to be stuck in limbo for nearly a year because of contractual disagreements.

After eventually singing with Ace Fu Records, “Pinback” was finally released in 1999 to critical acclaim in the music press. Building on the crafted and considered approach of their debut, Pinback's subsequent release, the “Some Voices” EP, once again earned rave reviews, and cemented the band’s position as complex indie-rockers. Leaving all reminiscence of rock and roll behind, Pinback’s sophomore album “Blue Screen Life” was issued in 2001.

The band’s next release “Summer in Abaddon”, marked a move away from Ace Fu, and was released by Touch and Go Records in 2004. The album was the first of the bands to chart on the Billboard 200, reaching No. 196. Pinback’s expansive collection of unreleased material and demos titled “Nautical Antique” found its release in 2006, followed by the album of new material “Autumn of the Seraphs” in 2007. After a five year hiatus, Pinback returned in 2012 to issue “Information Retrieved”, which charted at No. 71 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

  • Pinback

Pinback are masters at layering deep sonic sounds together to create the perfect blend of catchiness. Main songwriters, Zach Smith and Rob Crow, alternate back and forth between singing lead vocals on the songs they have written, while the other member harmonizes to enhance the performance.

Zach and Rob’s dynamics on stage are impeccable. Zach has a unique and intricate way of playing the bass, which involves strumming it like a guitar and playing complicated, melodic riffs. While Zach is playing intricate riffs on his bass, Rob is playing carefully crafted licks on his guitar that give each song an edge. Both Zach and Rob’s singing styles are often subdued and are used more as a form of instrumentation that creates an atmospheric sound. Zach also adds to Pinback’s elaborate soundscape by playing keyboards on such favorite tunes like, “Sender”. The band is also joined by a drummer, who holds down the rhythm while Zach and Rob play their catchy leads.

The stage is usually darkly lit at a Pinback concert, allowing for short experimental films to be projected on the screen behind the band. The films projected on the screen have very little continuity, but are vital in helping enhance the emotions of the songs performed. Rob and Zach seem very into their music when they perform live. Rob especially seems like a chilled-back sort of dude when on stage, creatively having installed a cup holder on his microphone stand as a place of rest for all the beer he consumes on stage. The more beer Rob consumes while performing, the more enthusiastic he begins to act while playing. Pinback has an extensive list of great songs they perform live spanning their entire career. The year 2014 marks the 10th year anniversary of Pinback’s revered album, Summer in Abaddon, so on their most recent tour you can expect to hear most of the classics from this great album. Pinback will also be reissuing Summer in Abaddon on maroon vinyl and will be selling it at their shows. Just another reason to catch them live.

  • Pinback has been a band on it's own for the 10 years I have listened to them. The balance of Smith and Crow's voices between each other is ambient--with lighter tones from Crow, and deeper tones from Smith. Smith's bass skills, as well as keyboard, are a beautiful sight to watch. I personally have never seen anyone play a bass in his style, or sound quite as melodic together with Crow's overlaying, layered guitar style.

They played with confidence and without any hesitations. It wasn't a big, done up concert with crazy light shows or over the top visuals. It was a tastefully done, exciting concert on its own with the band members--as well as scenes from old time-y movies in the background, which fit perfectly to their style and grace. Another creative move they made was the "paper plane" request method. They posted this on their website before the tour as well--the idea was that fans would send paper planes, with scrap paper that Pinback provided at their merch booth, having song requests on them. From there, they would play whichever request they felt most comfortable playing. Now, I know from being an avid concert goer that this is not typical, and "requests" are not always genuinely played out by bands. They did not hesitate to continue on playing exactly what the fans wanted to hear. Overall, I was completely surprised and in awe of how genuine, beautiful, fun, and brilliant Pinback was in concert. I would always go back and see them again.

  • I have been a fan of Pinback since ~2003. I have enjoyed every album from their more mellow, simpler first release to their now vivid and more intricate works from their latest release: Information Retrieved. Every song tells a story, some based on true events, some just sort of daydreams. With every beautiful bass intro and vocal harmony it sucks you in and takes away all your worries. Having seen them live three separate times, I have had the privilege of hearing their wide range of songs pretty inclusively. The most recent concert in 2014 featured the more popular songs at the forefront and included some of their less well-received releases (unjustly not well-received). Rob Crow continually caters to the audience by taking requests and taking part in the banter with the fans. Zach (Armistead Burwell Smith IV) always has a quiet demeanor on stage, but he is the best bass player I have ever seen live. He ranks up there with Primus' Les Claypool in terms of raw talent, and it's a wonder watching him play.

They may not be right for everyone, since they don't have the poppy riffs and predictable chorus/melody, they are definitely one of the most evolving bands out there. Every album is fairly different from the next, and yet, always awesome. Seeing them live is even better.

  • I've been listening to Pinback for over 12 years, they truly are my FAVORITE band of all time. That being said, this was my fourth time seeing them. The venue was amazing! Very small and personal. As for the band, they did well but I think Rob is throwing in the towel. It almost seemed like he didn't want to be there and wasn't really giving it his all. Maybe it's because they're getting older, I don't know. I would definitely go see them again but I won't fly across the country to do so. Pinback will continue to be my main squeeze. Hang in there Rob!!

  • Not a good show. Rob Crow's voice was gone and he could barely sing. I just wish he had cancelled the concert. You could tell he was struggling and in a lot of pain and he's basically half the band, so you could barely hear the songs and they were significantly changed from their original versions.

It wasn't worth watching Rob destroy his voice so after a terrible version of Fortress I left -- only stayed one hour.

  • The 10th anniversary Pinback concert is a show you must go to. Tera Melos is a great support. Really cool visuals. Pinback had a paper airplane request station where you could request songs and throw paper airplanes at the band. Great for fans of their older stuff. They literally only played older stuff.

  • Cool music and one of the best Bass players I've ever seen. Good set, they played many of my favorites, Penelope, XIV,,. We were right at the front in front of Rob's guitar amp, so hard to rate the acoustics.

Venue was very retro, and near Jack London square.
