Biography

  • Gwar are the band that takes shock rock to the extremes of the genre. Forming in 1984, the band is known for their outrageous costumes and stage shows just as much, if not more than their anvil heavy mix of hardcore punk and thrash metal.

Take your pick. Either Gwar are extra-terrestrial war gods from the dawn of time itself exiled to Earth for their cosmic crimes… or they’re a bunch of nerds from Richmond Virginia who formed the band out of the remains of other hardcore groups and nicknamed themselves things like Sexecutioner and Techno Destructo.

Personally, war gods from the dawn of time has a nice ring to it, but believe it or not, the truth is even better. The band came together from an idea that eventual lead singer Dave Brockie had. He was the frontman of Death Piggy, a hardcore band who were starting to get some serious recognition for their outrageous antics in concert, and his band struck up a friendship with Hunter Jackson.

Jackson was making props for both Death Piggy and a film he was trying to get made called Scumdogs of the Universe. However, the film was going nowhere and Brockie suggested that they use the props made for it, which were just going spare at the time, to create a new band to support Death Piggy. They called this new band Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh, but they shortened it to Gwar when the idea proved so successful that people were coming to see Death Piggy and leaving directly after the newly formed Gwar’s set.

Of course, this all sounds like the start of an outrageously fun but ultimately pointless summer project for some bored but imaginative hardcore kids. Not so for Gwar. Twenty years and an utterly astonishing 820,000 records sold over 13 studio albums in the United States alone, Gwar are still going strong even after Dave Brockie’s death in 2014. They are true legends of their genre, and a message that if a crazy idea might just work, with enough effort and hard work, it can.

Live reviews

  • GWAR is not for the squeamish. Their hellbound style of thrash and hardcore punk is loud and straight to the point.

Front man Oderous Urungus (recently deceased Dave Brockie) started the band in the late 80's. They quickly rose to infamy for their vulgar lyrics and even more vulgar live shows. The band typically plays smaller to medium sized venues.

The concert I saw was in a bar/venue conversion that held a few hundred people. The members of the band dress in full demonic costumes, covered with spikes and adorned with weaponry such as axes and swords.

During their set you will be shocked as they crucify nuns, abort fake fetus', and murder pop icons on stage, spewing fake blood (red corn syrup) over the crowd for the duration of their set. The band claims to be a band of interplanetary warriors and blasts favorites from their albums such as Ragnarok, Carnival of CHaos, and Scumdogs of the Universe. The shows are vehemently filled with political satire, pop culture, and relevant media icons -- typically being brutalized and murdered on stage for the enjoyment of the crowd.

The music is loud and crass, and the deep crunchy guitars will obliterate your soul with their screeches of death. GWAR has to be one of the most iconic bands on the planet, and if you can stomach the crude lyrics, loud guitars, and outrageous on-stage antics then go see GWAR next time they come to town.

  • Great fun show! The opening acts were Battlecross and Butcher Babies. Battlecross brought back an early 80's heavy metal feel and was reminiscent of early Iron Maiden or even Slayer. Butcher Babies were very enjoyable with the same style of metal but a more party feel to them. I really liked their song "Monster Ball" I would definitely go see them again if they were touring on their own.

Now Gwar always puts on an awesome show and this was no exception. Every year they have a theme to their show and this year was kill the internet. They had monitors on stage and would do a short "skit" concerning parodies of popular social media sites. Those would lead into songs about whatever subject they were talking about. Also during many songs mainly older ones they would have music videos playing showing images of the late Odorus Urungus which was a nice way of keeping his spirit alive and still part of the band. As always, if you go to a Gwar show, be prepared to come out soaked in blood and various other fluids.

  • The Bourbon Theater was a great venue but the tickets were OVERPRICED! They were listed a $22 plus fees which ultimatley led to them being $55 plus fees. All sid and done my tickets cost $155 for two! Not worth the money and ridiculous to overcharge that and then not consider it to be "premium" seating where you could actually sit during for the opening acts-which were NOT listed with the tickets. US Bastards were TERRIBLE, He Is Legend is very close to being a great band, Ghouls was funny in a nerdy way and GWAR was exactly as expected. The show dragged a bit and got too political and could have ended 20 minutes sooner. All in all I give it a 2/5 stars. Not worth the cost of the ticket.

  • absolutely amazing show, only one "problem" Ghoul absolutely stole the show, they had such an incredible live performance that I felt GWAR couldn't top it without Oderus, I was correct, that's not to say GWAR had a bad show, far from it, it was hilariously over the top as GWAR shows are supposed to be, they just lacked the energy Oderus had, that being said, their new album is much better after hearing a decent amount of it live, coming out of the show I became an even bigger Ghoul fan than before and can easily say they were the best band, on another note, US Bastards were a decent opener, and Doyle was very impressive, overall great show

  • This GWAR show was different from the start, without their frontman Oderus Urungus. I know a lot of people, including myself, were very skeptical about the lineup changes. Could it live up to past experiences and the Dave Brockie legacy? They absolutely did. Better than I ever thought they could. It's a fine line and not many bands could have made it work- they didn't try and REPLACE him, but they also didn't forget him. They played a variety of songs- some I've never heard them play live before, and some are obvious GWAR staples. It was well worth it and I will definitely be going to future shows.

  • If you hate fun, then a GWAR show is not for you. This is the greatest band to ever grace this planet. Tip: get a GWAR white shirt and wear it during the show. You'll end up with a pretty neat blood-splattered design.

  • It was my first time seeing GWAR and definitely won't be my last. Not only did they sound good but the show was an experience you can only get at a GWAR show. 13/10 will see them everytime they are in my area.

  • Gwar always puts on a killer show (literally) and this show was no exception. A fitting tribute to the loss of Oderus and a killer cover to end out the night!
