Biography

  • Andrew Belle (born 26 August 1984) aka Drew Fortson is an indie-rock singer and songwriter from Illinois, US who began his career in 2008.

Most cite university as a place of self-discovery and this definitely rang true for this promising star. Whilst studying marketing at Taylor University, Fortson began writing music in his second year as a therapeutic form as release locking himself away in a small room as he developed his craft often until the early hours of the morning. Inspired by his favourite musicians and artists such as: Chris Martin, Jesse Lacey and Thom Yorke, Fortson gradually developed his ability to form lyrics to compliment his intricate and carefully crafted melodies. Playing in bars and coffee houses around campus introduced him to the idea of pursuing a career as a musician.

After graduating from university, Fortson moved from his hometown of Chicago to Nashville in 2008 where almost immediately he was scouted by the nationally recognised touring group Ten out of Tenn. With little to none touring experience, Fortson recognised now by his stage name Andrew Belle was welcomed with open arms as he joined the likes of: Joy Williams, Mikey Ekko and Ashley Monroe as they toured the country.

In 2009 Belle won the award for Chicago Breakout Artist of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards. With several EP’s under his belt and continually taking inspiration from real life experiences, Andrew released his debut album “The Ladder” in 2010 which leant towards an indie/folk direction with comparisons to artists such as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes as Belle incorporated poppy piano melodies and romanticised notions explored in tracks like “Make It Without You”, “Oh My Stars” and the title track “The Ladder”.

By the time Belle worked on his second album, he’d been married and his found new inspiration for the album in his wife and exploration of faith which he cited as giving him something worth writing about. The album “Black Bear” released in 2013 delved into a more electronic direction influenced by the likes of: M83, Beach House and Washed Out whilst continuing the thematic narration from the previous release. For this album Belle was lyrically inspired by the seminal alternative rock band Brand New combined with similar vocal tones to that of Coldplay’s Chris Martin creating a dreamy and ambient atmosphere reflecting the equivalent of day and night throughout the album.

With music that speaks from the heart and inspired by real life experiences, audiences swoon over his intoxicatingly beautiful tracks which are relatable on so many levels.

Live reviews

  • Andrew Belle

For some very odd reason, Drew Forston uses the name Andrew Belle, and has turned Belle into a great up and coming singer-songwriter. Whatever the reason for using a completely different name, the guy has a lot of talent, both instrumentally and vocally. I had stumbled upon his music on one of the normal sites that I always check, and when I heard his “Black Bear” EP, I instantly checked to see of any live shows he may be doing. Luckily I checked at the right time, and was able to see his live set. Since his album had just come out, all of the songs that he performed were from “Black Bear,” which meant that I was familiar with all of the songs. He likes to keep things simple. He plays with one other person who was playing either percussion or another guitar. Belle himself will either play his guitar or a piano. It had really been the first time I had heard “Pieces” as an acoustic version and absolutely loved it better than the studio version. Since Belle produces and distributes his own music, there is very little editing done to his voice, which becomes instantly clear during his live set. He’s got the kind of voice that you wish serenaded you every day.

  • Illinois singer/songwriter Drew Fortson performs under the stage name Andrew Belle and in a relatively short career span he has won over the adoration of critics and fans with his soft rock sounds. After discovering music towards the end of his time at University, he fortunately dismissed the conventional path of marketing and invested time and effort into his solo career.

It had prosperous outcomes with two brilliant studio albums released and a long touring schedule organised to promote both. It is clear that Andrew prefers to be out on the road than confined to a studio space and this freedom really feeds through into his performance style. Everything feels very DIY regarding setlist as he plays with just two other musicians and you feel as though if the crowd were to shout requests, he would accommodate. Luckily for the audience Belle has given the show some thought as he recreates the majority of 'Black Bear' along with two well chosen songs from 'The Ladder'. They applaud enthusiastically as he gives a humble nod of the head and quick thank you before disappearing side stage.

  • Oh my God it couldn't have been better unless it was about another hour. His voice and talent are a gift from God. I felt privileged to be able just to listen to him. But, not only was he amazing while performing but he took the time out to take pictures and talk to anyone that asked. He even sold me the t-shirt I bought. I can't wait till he comes to town again. It is easy to understand why he is my favorite artist. I can't recommend him enough. I listened to his albums this morning on the way to Church, because I just couldn't get enough.

  • Venue was nice. Some seating and everywhere had a good view of the stage. Not happy that the doors opened at 8pm and Andrew Belle was finally on the stage at 10pm. I had to get bart all the way back to Fremont so I barely had an hour of listening. Love Belle though so it was worth the long trek.
