Biography

  • Electronic dnb mastermind Jonathan Gooch credits several aliases to his name (i.e. Feed Me, Unicorn), but has perhaps become most recognized as Spor. Gooch has been professionally active in the world of electronica since 2004, volleying conceptual constructions and playing with an array of stylistic forms (dubstep, electro house, dnb).

Jonathan Barry Gooch was born on 22 August 1984 in Hertfordshire, England. He decided to take up music composition occupationally after a friend introduced him to the drum and bass genre, climaxing in the England electronic scene. His alias Spor is derived from an IP identity of one of the 1st music files he used for sampling and also from one of his friend’s art projects.

In 2004 he issued some of his very 1st recordings such as “Judderman/The Whisper”, which came out through the label Damaged Mindz. Gooch also put out material under his own name this year. His track “Haywire” ended up on the compilation “Hardware Chronicles (Volume 4)” while “Outbroken (That Track)” appeared on “Paranoia EP Part 2: The Sequel”. A year later Gooch released his 4 song double EP “Tactics”.

2005 introduced several more singles: “Haunt Me/ Brickbeats” and “Ultimate Technology/ Cyberpunk”. Both these tracks came out through “Barcode Recordings” as did his 2006 collaborative single with Infiltrata “Three Faces”. His next single another collaborative effort this time with the electronic artist Audio featured his composition “Molehill”. That saw release through Subtitles; however, his proceeding EP “Supernova” came out through Lifted Music, a label he developed with his friend Chris Renegade and which included a roster of acts ranging from Apex, Ewun, Phace, and Evol Intent.

In 2008 he issued another EP, “Breath In, Scream Out” and the single “Claret’s March/ Stoppit” and closed out the aughts with “Aztec/Do Not Shake” and “Silver Spaceman/ Some Other Funk”. His EP “Conquerors & Commoners”, a title derived from a quote by American fiction writer Harlan Ellison, was released on 24 February 2010. Several more singles followed that year, such as “Knock You Down (Eskmo Remix) and his joint effort with Noisa “Falling Through”. Spor’s collaborative process leaked over to 2011 and on 28 November he issued the “Energy Ep (GY)” with Phace and Misanthrop. This release also was pressed on a limited run of white vinyl. The singles “Pacifica” and “Ziggurat/ Push Me, Pull You” respectively came out in 2011 and 2012 and were two of his last releases before he took a break from Spor.

Gooch divided his efforts among his dubstep project feed me, his IDM (intelligent dance music) manifestation Seven Stitch and his contributions to the folk group Crystal Fighters. However he returned stronger than ever under his name Spor in 2015, issuing his 1st and positively received album “Caligo”. Gooch gave the listener an option to either purchase the album or download it for free through bittorrent and supported this release with a lengthy tour.

Live reviews

  • I had a really great time seeing Spor (also known as Feed Me) perform in person a few years ago. The venue was this huge electronic dance music nightclub, and the place just plain oozed cool. It had a fog machine, strobe lights, lasers, an amazing sound system, all of the fixings. I’m so glad that my friends dragged me out to the show, because this incredible dubstep DJ from Hertfordshire, United Kingdom kept the whole crowd’s bodies moving all night long. It was fantastic to see a whole writhing mass of bodies just lose all inhibitions and move in every which way that felt right, and the music made sure that every single body in the building did just that. The atmosphere in the building was amazingly positive, and everybody that I met at the show was super nice. Without a doubt, one of the best experiences I’ve had dancing at a nightclub, and beyond just the physical experience the whole set that night had amazing track after amazing track. Spor’s got a brand-new EP out under his other alias, Feed Me’s Psychedelic Journey, out this year, so this would be the perfect time to check him out and have an unbelievably fun night dancing.
