Biography

  • Created by Sharon Browne and David Dowes, Celtic Woman is an all-female ensemble that play traditional Irish music and modern songs, with stylistic similarities to the likes of Enya, Moya Brennan and Clannad.

Rising out of the Riverdance stage production, David Downes, the show's music director, decided to form a vocal group that could take their traditional, celtic-oriented contemporary music to a wider audience. Since coming together in 2004, the band have achieved huge success, bolstered by their energetic performances that incorporate dance and song. Their first release shot them straight to the top of the Billboard World Music chart, staying there for 81 weeks, launching Celtic Woman's long career.

Following this success, the group toured extensively, spending 35 weeks a year on tour, with their live performances broadcast on PBS specials, helping to raise their popularity in the US. Their second album, "Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration" in 2006, finally moved their debut release from the top spot on the World Music chart.

Following this, their second album, "Celtic Woman: A New journey" (2007) became a crossover success, reaching number four o the Billboard 200, as well as again topping the World Music chart, with their three releases making up the top three of the chart.

Celtic Woman have found consistent success with their releases, with their live DVDs also achieving wide popularity. They have become one of the most successful world music acts, especially in America, selling over six million albums worldwide. They continued to top the World Music charts with their sixth album, "Lullaby" (2011), as well as fairing well on the Children's Chart. Their recent albums have incorporated more contemporary covers to their repertoire, keeping their sound fresh and unique. Their 2014 record, "Celtic Woman: Emerald- Musical Gems" included songs such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "You Raise Me Up" and "Danny Boy."

Live reviews

  • Celtic Woman

    184) Celtic Woman Irish folk music has a beautifully mystical tone to it, and Celtic Woman bring an exciting twist to the genre with their up beat new age spin on the classical genre. Their performance value is incredible, watching the violinist dance around the stage whilst playing an incredibly complex solo was a demonstration of genuine talent. The group won the EBBA award and from there they have gained much more international success.

Their show journeyed through upbeat Irish dance music, through to emotional ballads, and instrumental tracks full with dancing. There wasn’t a dull moment and you never knew what was going to happen next. There were many goose bump moments, for instance a beautiful soprano solo rang out through the venue a capella and held the entire auditorium in silence. The group performed tracks from a variety of their albums, including their self titled album, which charted at number one on the Billboard World Music chart back in 2004. It’s very rare to watch shows that sound better than the studio recordings because there’s no room for error, but Celtic Woman is definitely a band who achieve perfection live.

  • Irish all-female ensemble Celtic Woman was founded in the early 2000s by Sharon Browne and esteemed river dance choreographer David Downes. Since then the outfit has gone from strength to strength building a huge reputation in the worlds of celtic, folk and world music and they now travel globally sharing their neo-traditional sounds with large audiences. It is a heavenly sound and the music of Ireland has always been emotive so to hear it brought into the modern day via the vocals of six stunning songstresses really is wonderful.

The women interact brilliantly as the instrumentals, percussion and voice all interweave in beautiful harmonies. There is a true authenticity to the music and none of the Irish brogue is lost within the instrumentals which is really integral to the band's strength as performers. The audience responds well all night as they watch intent violin solos and huge high notes performed with breezy laid back attitude. The band finishes on a crescendo of 'The Call' which sounds completely momentous in close quarters and the audience erupt in applause and cheers.

  • Celtic Women were great, really enjoyed the show, one we will remember.

We just wish Asheville had a better venue that was designed for concerts rather than ball games.

10 out of 10 for Celtic Women but only 4 out of 10 for the venue.

Come on Ashvegas, build a better venue.

  • Amazing show. 10/10 would recommend.

Beautiful voices and really care about their fans and their show. You can feel the emoition in the songs.I think it sounds just as good if not better than the digital versions of the songs. The dancers are really great too.

  • It was a amazing experience. The ladies of Celtic Woman put on a great show and it was everything I expected. I will definitely be going to see them if they come back to the Denver area.
