Biography

  • The Wailers are a reggae band formed from the remnants of Bob Marley’s backing band of the same name. The band have been playing live since Marley’s death in 1981, touring Marley’s greatest hits and performing his most famous albums in full.

To sum up the history of The Wailers is akin to summing up the history of The Beatles, except even more so. The influence and impact of Bob Marley and The Wailers goes far beyond that of the fab four, to the extent where some, very understandably, call Marley a straight up prophet. Even from a purely musical perspective, we’re talking about the creators of some of the most iconic pop music of our time. So, no pressure then.

The first incarnation of The Wailers eventually consisted of Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingstone playing together as a power trio. However, after several chart successes Livingstone and Tosh were unwilling to tour, so the band split and Marley reformed the Wailers as his backing band. It’s hard to believe that everything that happened next only happened in seven years, but come 1981, Marley passed away due to cancer.

After Marley’s passing, bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett arguably became the band leader. In fact, Barrett’s nickname came from how he saw himself as the organizer of the band from the very beginning. He’d been Marley’s most trusted lieutenant right up until his passing, responsible for most of the songs arrangements and playing on the vast majority of his greatest hits.

Under his guidance the band has played to an estimated total audience of 24 million people over the years, and have worked and performed with artists like Sting, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana. They are the pioneers of one drop reggae to this day, and with a line-up as experienced as they are, a live show of theirs can still knock people for six at twenty paces. Highly recommended.

  • The Wailers

If you're looking for groovy, soulful reggae, look no further. The Wailers know how to bring it all the time, every time. Whether outside or inside, day or night, The Wailers know how to rock the house. Their happy attitudes inspire joy in the audience, creating a festive, 'we just want to have fun' atmosphere infused with soulful and spiritual passion. They are one of those bands that everyone knows is there solely because of their love of music. They outperform themselves with each new live show, entertaining the audience with their awesome riffs. Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin brings in the audience, encouraging them to sing along to “Is This Love” a little louder, clap their hands faster to “Buffalo Soldier”, compete with other sections of the venue in cheering along with “War”.

The Wailers is a reggae band that has evolved and changed many times, and accepted each new development, no matter how unexpected, as it came. Originally formed in 1969 as Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh, the group went on to be Bob Marley and the Wailers and, after Bob Marley's death, became the band they are today: The Wailers. They are one of the most internationally recognized reggae bands, having sold over 250 million albums worldwide with Marley. The Wailers have also played with other international acts such as Stevie Wonder, Alpha Blondy, and Sting. Playing on countless tours to an approximated 24 million people, The Wailers are the greatest expounder's of the Jamaican reggae tradition alive today.

  • The incredible living legends that are The Wailers surely need no introduction- but in case you’ve been living on Mars for the past 50 years, I’ll divulge. The eponymous backing band for the late, great Bob Marley, The Wailers regrouped following Marley’s death in 1981 with bassist (and sole remaining founding member) bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett fronting the group. This year, The Wailers embarked on the worldwide Legend Tour 2014, celebrating 30 years since the release of Bob Marley & The Wailer’s ‘Legend’- the best selling reggae album of all time. Despite having been around the block a few years, the enigmatic Barrett and the large mixture of musicians and vocalists still deliver a fantastic show of positive vibes and upbeat hits. They were a perfect choice for this year’s Glastonbury festival, where everyone was out to let loose and have a good time. Barrett elicited a huge response with the silly question, ‘Do you love Bob Marley?’ before breaking into ‘Rastaman Vibration’, ‘Buffalo Soldier’ and other much-loved classics like the arm-waving choruses of ‘One Love’ and ‘Is This Love?’, which had the entire crowd at the West Holts stage dancing and swaying as one. It was a true honour to hear the legend of Marley live on, and The Wailers, as pioneering masters of reggae, are a must-see for all music fans.

  • Their founding, and most important, member might be gone, with Bob Marley - easily the most legendary musician in the history of reggae - having been taken at a tragically young age - but that’s not to say that The Wailers aren’t still a going concern; like Marley’s legacy, it seems as if they’re set to keep on going forever. Technically now known as The Wailers Band, the group currently retains original Wailer Aston Barrett on bass, although guitarist Junior Marvin now tours separately under the name of The Original Wailers, alongside fellow founder member Al Anderson. The Wailers continue to tour the UK regularly, playing high-profile slots at major festivals like Glastonbury as well as in support to the other bands; they played in front of a huge crowd at Manchester’s Heaton Park in the summer of 2012, opening for The Stone Roses. They play their own shows in smaller venues, too, running through Wailers cuts and some of Marley’s solo classics with their extensive live band, as well as a slew of reggae and ska standards, too. With the possible exception of catching one of his sons - like Ziggy or Damian - at a live show, The Wailers are about as close as you can get to Bob Marley in a live context these days; he’s certainly there in spirit.

  • You must attend the show if you're lucky enough to have a local venue welcoming the legends of reggae, The Wailers! Such a spiritual journey, channeling the spirit of Bob Marley from the opening number until the last! I raised my family with The Wailers' music and when I found out they, the legends, were coming to Bogart's in Cincinnati, I bought 8 tickets and took my kids to a show they will never forget! Crowd was amazing and spirit of Jah & Bob flowed through all of us. Bonus mention: the Barretts came down and hung out with us after the show, sharing kind words, giving hugs, autographs and posing for photos! Thanks to the Wailers for taking it on the road once again!

  • These guys are the real deal. They are rasta men and women who bring Reggae music to the masses, in typical Bob Marley style. Three of the members are men who actually played and toured with Bob, so they do know their stuff. Old favorites every night. They have been on tour for almost a year now, playing most nights of the week, but appear fresh and rejoicing in Jah's spirit. And for those not close to the venue, they record LIVE every show. So everyone is a winner when it comes to the Wailers. Friendliest group ever, take pics with them, or ask for an autograph. They always have time. Jah bless the Wailers xo

  • Just as you would expect they gave us fantastic music giving everyone there a great feel good factor. We had tickets for standing as it was a last minute booking and we wondered how this would work out. As it happened it was the best choice possible, we could dance all night whilst those in seats were restricted. It also created a much friendlier atmosphere as we were chatting and dancing with all the people around us.

So happy we were able to get in the venue, thanks to Songkick, right at the very last minute.

Would definitely recommend The Wailers for a great evening at a very reasonable price.

  • WOW! I am still Jammin' from last night's show! It will go down as one of my fave concerts of all time :) I had so much fun and I danced my butt off!!! It was such a blast! If only all of the corrupted world (like 45 and his horrific administration) would go to a show like this.....it would be a better world for sure. A huge reggae hug to The Wailers for a super fantastic show. I wish I had a heart meter to measure how much love and happiness was flowing out of my heart :) I just want to linger in it all day...or rather....for the rest of my life :) Much Love and Peace XOXOXOXOXO

  • Great to see The Wailers in Leicester - played all the classics and more. A shame that there wasn’t a live horn section (replaced by MacBook and keyboards!) and there also seemed to be a few technical problems (lots of roadies coming on stage). Some of the songs were also a little drawn out with extended guitar solos and audience involvement but still a good gig
