Lunice Fermin Pierre II (born 1988) is an electronic musician, DJ, producer, and solo recording artist who along with Hudson Mohawke comprises the group TNGHT. Though Lunice primarily works in the realm of electronica he has also taken interest in various forms of hip-hop including instrumental, trap, and two-step.
Lunice was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Filipino and Haitian Immigrants. Before he made his rounds as a musician Lunice was out on the street breakdancing. In fact his skills as a b-boy were so good that he was able to perform competitively for the 701 Squad. Anyone familiar with breakdancing knows that this art form goes hand in hand with music and as an advent of urban culture hip-hop inevitably acted as the backing track for these escapades. In particular Lunice was influenced by the fruity loop constructed beats of producer 9th wonder. This inspiration eventually led him to start a musical project of his own.
Though Lunice was habitually recoding solo material by 2007 he was still acting independently of a label. This year saw him play his 1st show at Montreal’s nightclub Hovatron’s monthly bass culture. At the show he met underground hip-hop DJ Sixtoo and was subsequently asked to play at the Megasoid parties.
The following year Lunice put out a video for Lazerword’s track “Gucci Sweatshirt”. In 2009 he self-released his three song EP “Out of Touch” and in 2010 was playing shows at both the Red Bull Music Academy and Sonar Music Festival. Also in 2010 he signed to the label LuckyMe and issued the EP “Stacker Upper”. His follow up EP “One Hundred” came out just a year later.
In 2011 Lunice engaged in several collaborative projects such as his joint remix of Deerhunter’s “Helicopter” with Diplo and his contribution to Azealia Bank’s landmark single “212” (he also made a cameo appearance in the song’s music video). Around this time Lunice was touring frequently, sometimes promoting his material on BBC Radio 1, and occasionally playing alongside Mad Decent Block Party.
In parallel with his solo career Lunice was releasing material with his group TNGHT. By 2012 the duo released their self-titled studio EP through Warp records and also co-produced Kanye West’s iconic single “Blood on the Leaves”.
Read moreAs a musician, I absolutely love the experience of being in an audience totally swept of their feet by someone’s music, whatever the genre. I love the passion that it draws from people, and I love it when it makes people dance. This act, Lunice is one of those EDM artists that without fail; will manages to fill out rooms on his tours and make people dance. Tonight, that is what it is all about for this artist.
This guy has got some pretty cool accolades to his name too, having featured on some of BBC Radio 1’s shows on the dance music shows, and having collaborated with Azealia Banks on the song “212”, for which her featured in the video. He really sets it off this evening with a single called “Higher Ground” that gets this audience jumping with their hands in the air, singing along. He subtly works in “212”, which creates a huge hysteria in this audience inspiring shouting along with the chorus.
Amazing. He has the stage presence of a superstar and gives 100% to every show. See him 4 times now, and would pay double to see him again. Lunice is an amazing artist. He can knock the cold feet out of anyone and light the place up. If you get a chance to see him. You HAVE TO ATTEND.
