Biography

  • An alternative rock band formed in Sacramento, California, USA. Cake have been going strong since 1991 with lead singer and band creator John Mcrea.

Cake has had many members in the past, but the current members consist of the three original members: John Mcrea - lead singer, Vince DiFiore - trumpeter and returning bassist Gabe Nelson - who left before the release of their first album 'Motorcade of Generosity' and returned when bassisst at the time; Victor Damiani left. The fourth member of the band is Paulo Baldi who joined after 2009 after previously working with the band on their fifth studio album.

Their debut album Motorcade of generosity was self recorded and self released. Copies of this album were being sold from the back of the bands van in order for them to pay for the costs of their tour. The album was well received and was even named one of the best indie releases by 'Pulse!' The success of this album led to Cake being signed by Capricorn records in 1995.

The musical influences of Cake span far and wide as they range from Iranian folk music, to the likes of hip hop, mariachi, rock, funk and country.

The second album of Cake entitled 'Fashion Nugget' was extremely successful and managed to go platinum. The third album 'Prolonging The Magic' followed suit and also went platinum. It was named as the second best album of 1998 by The Columbian.

Cake's fourth album 'Comfort Eagle', saw their prior success catch up with them as they signed a deal with Columbia Records. The success of the album allowed the band to tour across America, Canada and even Europe.

On august 14 2007 Cake formed their own label which allowed them to release their own albums. In 2011 Cake released Showroom of Compassion which they recorded and produced by themselves and managed to open as number 1 on the Billboard top 200 Albums.

Live reviews

  • Cake

The start time of the show was contested- as it turns out, it was thirty minutes later than what was posted on the venue's website. Okay, fine, it happens. Thirty minutes isn't that bad.

The band came on a bit late, and the lead singer (John) preached about not missing your life because you have your nose buried in your cell phone. It was fine, the crowd was into it. They played a few songs, they were playing well, but John said he was sick and did a lot of random chatting between songs that didn't really go anywhere.

John announced that there was going to be an intermission and then a second set. And of course there was a long, drawn-out explanation of the intermission as well. They played for forty minutes before the intermission, which was fifteen minutes. Forty minutes isn't a very long set, but he said he was sick so I'll make an allowance.

So the fifteen minute intermission is over and John came out by himself. They had put a potted tree on the stage at the beginning of the intermission and when John came back he explained that they were going to give it away to someone in the audience. Naturally, this got the drunk, impatient crowd very excited. Over the din, John then tried to explain that he would only give it to someone quiet- after rambling on about why they were doing this and how it was all on their website and on and on.

Of course people were not quiet. There were three or four guesses before someone guessed live oak, which it was, but John didn't know that. Apparently he was told the wrong kind of tree, so he kept taking guesses- and when it started taking too long he whipped out his cell phone to try to look up alternate names for the tree, because he didn't understand why no one was guessing it. The crowd was getting rowdy, and John ended up calling someone up to the stage to claim the tree and then rescinding the invitation when he realized that guess was incorrect. John then decided to find the person who had originally guessed live oak.

John himself was getting cranky at this point, trying to fight the crowd for quiet so he could hear the people he called on for guesses. He got angry at the person who had told him what kind of tree it was. After he FINALLY picked someone, he gave a long, antagonistic speech to the guy about how he was entering into a binding contract to care for the tree and send pictures of himself with it every year. Even after he finally got the tree off of the stage he started telling the audience that we should hold the guy accountable, harass him about caring for the tree if we see him. Not a very peaceful approach for someone who claims to be so anti-hate. At one point John started cursing and said "I hate this, now I don't even want to play the second set," and upon hearing this the drummer got off of his platform and started walking away- apparently John has made good on those threats in the past.

The band still played well, but there was a very negative vibe going from then on. People in the crowd were heckling the band, and a few songs into the second set someone collapsed and they had to stop playing and turn on the house lights. I took that as my cue to leave.

I'm glad I got to see Cake live again, but I think I'm done now.

  • Who doesn't love CAKE?! They are definitely one of those bands who never ceases to amaze me. I've been listening to them since I was a kid because they are a band the whole family can enjoy. Their lyrics are relatable but still so very unique (and for the most part, kid friendly!). How many bands successfully use a vibraslab? So few that I had no clue what it was called and had to Google "Instrument CAKE uses."

Their latest album, Showroom of Compassion, proved that after 17 years, they've matured as a band but have still stuck to their roots, sticking to monotone (in the best way) vocals, more amazing trumpet solos, and fun, repetitive choruses that last just the right amount of time. They're albums are diverse but still seem to all work cohesively. Their " B-Sides and Rarities" album proves that they can take a song as iconic and heavy as Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" and still inject their own fantastic feel.

I've seen them live three times now and each is better than the last. From singer John McCrea's dry humor and Vince DiFiore's killer trumpet solos, to even giving away avocado trees to fans, I found myself singing (or yelling) along to almost every song, my favorite being Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle. They love to get the crowd involved and are absolutely a band I would pay to see again and again, as it is always a new, but extremely memorable experience. As a band, they continuously go the distance.

  • I wasn't expecting much for a late 2017 performance by Cake, but was pleasantly surprised! They played in San Diego Dec 15 and 16- I went the 16th. As a casual fan, I didn't know all the songs, but it was a great set and John the lead did a good job keeping the energy and good vibes up. Been to a lot of concerts this year, Cake was the surprise best of this year!

  • We saw Cake at the Pageant in St. Louis as part of the "Ho Ho Show" series put on by a local radio station. I had seen Cake once before when I was in college, when they only had one or two albums, so I was really looking forward to seeing them again so many years later. Cake was the only band performing that night, so we got to see a really long set.

  • Cake did an unbelievable set, I was rocking the whole time they were on stage. Aside from some feedback on the sound channel from his guitar everything was amazing. They have stage present and they get the crowd involve with their set. Amazing concert will definitely go see them again.

  • I love the band, love their energy, but they were scheduled for 1 hour and fifteen minutes only, so that was a bummer. Then John McCrea spent lots of time talking during the show and wasted some good time that coulda been spent on music. I left feeling wanting more to be honest.

  • I typically love Cake, but this time the whole band seemed like they were under the drowsy spell of a long drug binge. John McShea was off-key, all of Cake's typically impeccable timing was missing, and the whole thing lacked feeling. It sounded like the band was mocking us.
