Biography

  • Van Halen (formed in 1974) is a seminal and world-renowned hard rock band with heavy metal influences, led by the refined guitar-playing prowess of Eddie Van Halen, hailing from Pasadena, California, U.S.

Born the sons of Dutch musician Jan Van Halen, brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen began playing music together in the 1960s. Initially with Eddie on drums and Alex taking guitar responsibilities, the brothers swapped after Eddie grew tired of Alex playing on his drum kit. The pair’s first group, The Broken Combs, formed in the early ‘70s, with the brothers raising their profile in the subsequent bands The Trojan Rubber Co. and Genesis.

Genesis subsequently became Mammoth and ultimately Van Halen in 1974. By this time David Lee Roth had joined as lead vocalist and Mark Stone on bass, and the group were beginning to cause a stir in the local area playing parties and clubs in Pasadena and Hollywood. Following a successful show at Gazzarri’s, Van Halen became managed by Mark Algorri and Mario Miranda and crafted an early demo tape. Despite a second demo recording session with Kiss’ Gene Simmons, a deal with Kiss management failed to surface and the group subsequently signed with Warner Bros. in 1977.

The band’s debut, self-titled album was released in February 1978 and peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard 200. Aided by the singles “Runnin’ with the Devil”, “Eruption”, “You Really Got Me”, and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”, the extolled record catapulted Van Halen to national notoriety. The band’s sophomore, “Van Halen II” followed in 1979 and spawned the group’s first hit single “Dance the Night Away”. With the arrival of the ‘80s Van Halen expanded their fan base as well as discography with the albums “Women and Children First” in 1980 and “Fair Warning” in 1981.

By this time tensions had risen between Roth and Eddie regarding the direction of the band, nonetheless in 1984 Van Halen enjoyed their greatest commercial success with the album “1984”. Featuring the band’s smash hit single “Jump”, which proved to be their first and only No. 1 single, the record rose to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Marked by electronic excursions with prominent use of Eddie’s synthesizer, the album garnered widespread critical acclaim and spawned the subsequent singles “I’ll Wait”, “Panama”, and “Hot for Teacher”.

David Lee Roth was kicked out the group later in 1984 and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, formerly of the band Montrose. The new lead singer’s debut was on 1986’s “5150”, which shot straight to No. 1, spawning the singles “Why Can’t This Be Love”, “Dreams”, and “Love Walks In”. The No. 1 studio albums “OU812” and “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” followed before the band issued the live double album “Van Halen: Live: Right Here, Right Now” in 1993. Following the No. 1 album “Balance” in 1995 tensions between Eddie and Hagar grew to unworkable levels and Eddie kicked Hagar from the band. The guitarist subsequently re-hired Roth for two songs on their “Best Of, Vol. 1”, before ultimately disposing of him again and hiring Gary Cherone.

The record “Van Halen III” arrived in 1998 which despite charting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 soon fell-off and proved the band’s worst-selling album. Cherone was later fired and Van Halen’s progress stalled until 2004 when Hagar returned for a American tour to promote a new greatest hits collection. Featuring Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass and the return of Roth, the band embarked on their most successful tour in 2007 before heading to the studio in 2012 to released the album “A Different Kind of Truth”.

Live reviews

  • Van Halen

With the reinstatement of lead singer, David Lee Roth, in 2006 Van Halen has been back on top of their game cranking out hit after hit during live performances.

Van Halen is just as enthusiastic as their hype has depicted them to be. David Lee Roth is still as wild as ever running around stage, jumping up and down, performing antics on stage, and bellowing out all the catchy melodies to our favorite Van Halen tunes. Eddie Van Halen still proves himself as a master genius, shredding to every note of “Eruption” nearly melting all the strings off his guitar from the sheer speed of his performance. Eddie also has been performing his other instrumental guitar track, “316” which is a beautiful song dedicated to his son Wolfgang Van Halen, who is also a member of the band. Wolfgang adds a youthful appearance to the band and is well skilled on the bass guitar playing every note to all the old Van Halen songs with great precision. Alex Van Halen’s drum playing is just as intense as ever perfectly banging out the highly intricate rhythm of “Hot for Teacher.” The stage setup for a Van Halen concert is epic. Massive guitar amps are stacked high and wide allowing Eddie to blast us away with his crunchy guitar shredding. The stage wraps into the audience allowing David Lee Roth to have free reign over the venue to prowl into the audience and make them a part of the show. The lighting is also a magnificent theatric, which includes a wild display of a disco ball during the song “Jump”. Their most recent setlist is sure to please fans with all the classic hits being performed as well as some tracks from their new album, 'A Different Kind of Truth.' A Van Halen show is one fun ruckus of a party to attend ranging from displays of high-energy performances to confetti raining down on the audience as they listen to their favorite Van Halen tune.

  • This was the worst concert I have EVER been to. My husband and I are frequent concert goers so I have many comparison points to judge by. We are well aware that as our favorite bands from back in the day age, voices fade and we are ok with that reality. But what happened to David Lee Roths voice cannot be written off as normal aging. He ruined the entire show with his voice, actions and antics.

The opener Kenny Wayne Shepherd was awesome and the only thing wrong with his set was it was too short.

The Van Halens are still the masters of their instruments and the only reason we stayed past the opening song was to enjoy some of the amazing instrumentals.

But then DLR would open his mouth and it was worse than nails on a chalkboard. We hung on til it stopped. Not only did he sound horrible, but at one point he even declared " I forgot the *f ing lyrics". What a complete and total lack of professionalism

The Van Halens should be embarrassed at the tarnish these concerts are putting on their legacy. Judging by the other reviews I an not alone in my disappointment.

We actually left early, which is something I have never ever done.

Save your hard earned money and pass on this concert.

    Utterly disgusted.

  • I have seen hundred of bands and without doubt, this is not a recommended one to go to. For what this could have been, it did not fulfill anything but songs that you knew but also songs that were killed each time David started to sing. The lack of charisma from David, and the rest of the bank simply looking down, playing their instrument and then ending the show was not a night to remember. If you had no idea who David was, you would think this was a Karaoke singer at 3 am in the morning at your typical dive bar attempting to sing something that he listened to 30 years ago. Def Leopard, Styx, Journey, Rush, you name any other vintage band and they deliver. No wonder this band cancels shows and has issues...they simply do not want to be there on stage..they are simply trying to make a few bucks..at least that is what it felt like..

After reviewing the past set lists from concerts earlier in the month, I noticed they play the exact set of songs with no changes...they play, they go to the next town with one truck and a few lights...Come on Van Halen..you let many down..90 percent Male crowd..never seen a concert so male only oriented in my life...

  • Since lead singer and legend David Lee Roth was reinstated to the band in 2006, Van Halen has gone from strength to strength and their live shows have attracted ever more fans. Their shows are undeniably high in energy and powerful. Watching such an iconic band live is an incredible, once in a lifetime experience. Despite having been in the industry for over four decades, the band is still as magnetic on stage as ever and they feel far from retirement. Thy bring an impressively high energy and enthusiasm on stage and they continue to be extremely skilled and talented musicians who can hold an entire audience with an inspiring guitar solo. Van Halen opened with their classic hit, ‘Jump’, a great opener for the show because of the insane crowd reaction it garnered and the party atmosphere it induced. Van Halen played all their old hits as well as some new ones from their latest album, interspersing the classics with new songs to keep the audience happy. The lights and fireworks that erupted from the stage were spectacular and really added to the whole experience.

  • Since lead singer David Lee Roth was reinstated in 2006, the American rock outfit Van Halen seem to have a new lease of life when performing live. They have been a staple cult icon on the circuit since their beginnings over four decades ago and with a gruelling touring schedule has come four musicians with surpassable musical capabilities.

The instrumentals often last more than five minutes in duration yet they are so incredibly skilled that the audience simply cheers louder and louder the longer that they last. The crowds are also receptive to new tracks played from 'A Different Kind Of Truth' as Lee Roth launches himself from side to side of stage in his usual manner. It is however the finale of 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love' and 'Jump' that receive the largest cheers of the evening and this is where the band reuse their final energy to delight the crowds with a final dizzying wall of sound. They easily cement the reputation as heavy metal icons and as the final confetti settles in the grounds you can see why they have influenced so many modern contemporaries.

  • hey now, to make it simple the good and the bad are equal on this concert.first the good david is david always stealing the show, but this time he smiles so much for the audiences attention i thought i was attending a lame los vagas casino stage show,as a carnival act dave is perfect for your attention.

next van halen a somber guy now equally ready to hit the vagas cacino platform.i hate to use the word boring but then again i love eddie no matter what way he comes out.

at most times the sound man could not produce the van halen sound, the glitter and guitars were less effective here as was in a real van halen show of the past.

as for the band, they together all sounded very disadent on most every song. i lost my place most of the time asking myself what song are they actualy playing??

as for the evening im so happy the band got together for one last time. now bring on sammy hagar van halen! and really rock our boots off next time....

    aye.!!

  • Why should I write a review for a band never showed up while we were sitting in a restaurant and 5 o'clock yesterday they canceled the show at the last minute because of Dave had the flu! So you're going to tell me two months before that they put the tickets on Groupon for $20 or the same seats I paid $80 I'm sure the place didn't sell out so they probably said we'll figure something out or an excuse to cancel last minute I've been waiting for the show i've been waiting for the show for the last six months and they cancel that and then will fit goes on Twitter to say and it's only one show the rest of the show is on and planned so I'm a little bummed right now not to see Van Halen and I probably won't see them ever again because it's probably going to be the last tour so here is your review I give 0 to 10 I give them a zero for effort to try to even play!

  • Overall disappointing show, due to Roth. He's officially had it. His voice didn't sound bad but he seemed to spend most songs talking thru lyrics and was off beat with the accompanying instrumentals. That's when he remembers the lyrics. Its too bad because the passage of time hasn't slowed Eddie's guitar playing too much, the occasional pause on a riff not withstanding. Im not much for drum solos, so the one by Alex was mercifully short. I didn't pickup much bass notes so I assume Eddie's kid hit his marks. (I would have like to see Michael Anthony just for posterity but apparently that will never happen)

Kenny Wayne Shepard was the opening act, and was very good! Nice bluesy sound, mixing in original work with Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn covers. I would dig seeing him at a smaller venue

  • Great show last night in Dallas. WVH pulled out all the stops in formatting the set list, and we got a couple unexpected additions (In a Simple Rhyme, Dirty Movies). The Van Halens performed as expected, which is brilliant as usual. DLR was in full DLR mode, so it often seemed like he was at an entirely different show, although it was mostly entertaining. It's just as well it wasn't easy to clearly his vocals from where we were standing. I'm not knocking Dave's ability, he has just always phoned in the vocal performances although he's capable of doing better. KWS band was excellent as well.

  • Hands down one of the worst co cents I've EVER been to. When Dave could remember the words, he sang out of key and missed his mark. Luckily Eddie missed enough notes to distract the audience. The amateurish video in the backdrop almost covered for the bad mix of Alex's drumming. We left, not alone, because this was a shameless money grab and should be called out for it
