Biography

  • The J. Geils Band is an American blues-rock and new wave band formed in 1967 from Massachusetts. They are best known for their hit single “Centerfold” in the mid 80s.

The group was originally an acoustic trio during the early 60’s, featuring original front man and guitarist John Geils, Danny Klein on bass, and Richard Salwitz a.k.a. “Magic Dick” on harmonica, going under the guise “'Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels”

By the late 1967 the band decided to switch up their approach, changing to electronic guitars and adding a drummer, Stephen Jo Bladd, an organist, Seth Justman, as well as a new vocalist and frontman in Peter Wolf. At this point, the J.Geils Band was born.

They were signed in 1970 to Atlantic Records, and released their eponymous debut that same year. Throughout the 70s the band gained recognition for their blues bar sound, with R&B tones and soul influences oozing out of their releases. They obtained radio play with their covers of soul classics such as “Lookin’ For A Love” and “Ain’t Nothin But a Houseparty”. During this time, critics singled out Magic Dick for his original use of the harmonica as a primary instrument within the band.

Towards 80’s the band progressed onto a new-wave sound, showing their versatility as a group once again and in 1981, after releasing 11 albums to varying chart success, they hit the jackpot with their 12th studio album, “Freeze Frame”.

The LP was an out and out triumph for the band, reaching the top of the US charts, selling platinum figures, and staying there for four weeks. It even saw overseas success for the first time for the band, reaching the UK top 20. Not only did the album do well, but the lead single “Centerfold” charted at number one and number three in the US and UK respectively.

Ironically, having worked for over a decade to reach the top of the charts, tensions within the band got unbearable, and Wolf left the band a few years later, citing “artistic differences”. The band quickly disbanded, and were not seen together until 1999, where they embarked on a reunion tour. The J. Geils Band have played intermittently throughout the years since then.

Live reviews

  • I knew these fine , talented folks when they were just getting it together & it was pretty obvious where they were headed !I had been back stage as a guest several time & it never occurred to me how much I was missing by not being front & center as an audience member . I got my ticket to the Bob Seger /JGeills venue at the Gwinnett Center near Atl. Great seat ... when you go alone it's easy to ace a good spot . The boys came out like a freight train in flames & never let up !! I hadn't seen them in years & never expected that much energy from vintage rockers . They got BETTER... tighter , intense , visceral & sexy hot ! I was sitting with a bunch of young Georgia peaches & saw them lose their minds... The girl next to me was being restrained by her rather rattled date .. so funny ! This was a bit of a tough crowd for this northeast band at first . I heard some folks saying .." Oh these are the guys from the Adam Sandler movie ". It took a song or 2 before the frenzy kicked in & these southerners were on their feet , on board & full speed ahead ! When Peter Wolf launched into "Raputa the Buta" he had the whole stadium eating out of his hand ,esp when he crawled across the stage on his knees . Try that Beiber ! What a showman. Danny Klein looked especially sharp in a black suit with hot pink accessories .. true Ace on Bass style ! MD was in rare form in tight leather & smokin that harp !! Young girls were going mad & I felt 18 again ...sigh ! They have 3 standup backup girls in mini skirts & fishnets.. provocative & funky... legs & voices for days ! The rest of the guys were on top of their game & this band had the night ! It was all theirs . They put us all away wet & shaky & it was a rush ! Do not miss them . They are the music of our youth & will be racking up new, young fans as they tear up venues nationwide. Long Live the JGEills band !!!

  • As always, the J. Geils Band provided a spectacular, high energy rock and roll / rhythm and blues show that is incomparable in today's concert offerings. The extra long set of nearly two hours was highlighted by the "Four Aces" of the original band (Peter Wolf, Seth Justman, Magic Dick, Danny Klein) who collectively power the best party band sound in the business. Newcomers on lead guitar (Duke) and drums (Brian) are in total synch with the classic tight riffs generated since 1969 by The J. Geils Band. It was shear joy to hear them play and participate in the "dance party" atmosphere that is the J. Geils experience.

  • Get ready for the highest energy show you will ever see. From the first moment the band hits the opening chords of "First I look at the Purse" and Mr. Peter Wolf, the "Woofa Goofa" dances onto the stage it is 2 and half hour houseparty.

The jive talking Wolf, harmonica genius of Magic Dick, Solid base of Mr. D.K. and the pumping piano and organ of Seth Justman set this band apart from all others and is the reason they have been around for over 40 years.

You will be dancing in the aisles, partying, singing along and having the best time you ever have at a rock and roll show.
