Biography

  • William Fitzsimmons (born in 1978) is an American indie and folk singer-songwriter and musician known for his candid and emotive songwriting, hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.

Fitzsimmons’ childhood was spent immersed in his family’s musical home, making his initial creative excursion playing the piano and later the trombone and guitar. As he progressed through school the growing musician learned to play the banjo, mandolin, the ukulele, and melodica, as Fitzsimmons explored his fascination with instruments and sounds. During his time studying for a Master’s Degree in counselling from Geneva College, the singer-songwriter crafted a DIY collection of songs which later became his debut album.

Hailed by critics for its candid, retrospective and personal approach Fitzsimmons’ debut “Until When We Are Ghosts” arrived in 2005. Like its predecessor, his sophomore “Goodnight” (2006) was also independently produced and recorded using the singer’s home equipment. 2008’s “The Sparrow And the Crow” became Fitzsimmons’ first studio album, earned a wave of positive review, and later won iTunes U.S.’s Best Singer/Songwtier Album of 2008. Regularly drawing comparisons to the brutal honesty of Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens’ output, Fitzsimmons’ music has been widely used in TV dramas which utilise its powerful and emotive qualities. The exposure afforded the singer as a result of the high-profile appearances on “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Brothers & Sisters”, and “Army Wives” among others, has greatly increased Fitzsimmons’ popularity.

The EP “Derivatives” arrived in 2010, followed by the 2011 full-length “Gold in the Shadow” which features vocals from Julia Stone of Angus and Julia Stone. The singer worked with Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla to produce his subsequent “Lions” LP in 2014, which was succeeded by the mini-LP “Pittsburgh” in 2015.

Live reviews

  • William Fitzsimmons

With an alluring sense of kindness and vulnerability, William Fitzsimmons has the ability to instil the most perfect kind of silence at one of his concerts.

Now don’t get me wrong here. I love belting out the words to my favourite tracks being performed by my favourite artists as much as the choir of drowning cats that seems to enjoy serving as my backing singers, but there are some concerts where you just sit tight, shut up and lose yourself entirely to the beautiful music that’s about to dance through your ears.

It’s amazing the man is still standing after what he has overcome throughout his life, but the fact that he shares that in his music through songs like “Everything Has Changed”, “If You Would Come Back Home” and “Beautiful Girl” truly pulls you in and is beautifully soundtracked by him and his band.

While it would be a rare thing to see Caitlin Crosby joining him on tracks like “After Afterall”, he still plays them in such a way which not only intrigue you by their subtle “live” variations, but you get to experience the raw feel that’s meant to accompany the song with all its plucked note intricacies and quietly delivered melodies. Did I mention he also does a wicked cover of “I Kissed A Girl”? Nailed it. *Drops Mic*

  • This was my first ever gig, but it sure was a great way to begin!

Fitzsimmons is fantastic playing live - I'd say even better so than in the studio - and was perfectly accompanied for many songs by the extremely talented Abby Gundersen. They worked together very well. The church setting probably enhanced the "acoustics" as well I guess, but well done to them for choosing a good place to play.

Between playing a good range of songs new and old, William chatted to the audience a little and turned out to be a really interesting and entertaining guy to listen to. He was very pleasant.

Any complaints? Not really, I suppose merch was a bit limited, but I'd struggle to make any proper complaints. Even the supporting act was decent.

Thanks William and Abby - a brilliant show!

  • Last night's show at Shank Hall was amazing. William played a great mix of old and new (Pittsburgh)songs. We we fortunate enough to be right at the stage so it wa super special for us. His struggles with his electric guitar were pretty funny. Also a fan requested he play Josie and he brought h up on stage to help out with the guitar. William is incredible personable. They highlight of our night (besides of course) his beautiful (yet sad) songs was most definitely getting the chance to talk with him for a bit after the show. A real genuine guy.wish I was going to The City Winery tonight to catch another set.

  • This was a fun show, and free! The Magic Rat is a tough room because it's long and skinny and the stage doesn't face most of the people in the room. But that's not his fault! The openers, Jim and Sam, had such a great sense of humor and amazing harmony. They were lovely. And then William Fitzsimmons was just his quiet self. Didn't talk to us at all, just played his music. Small venue, which is nice. His voice is incredible and his songs give me "feels" and I just really enjoyed it! Cute merch too!

  • Is it possible that hearing his music live is BETTER than his recordings? YES! He sounded so awesome I thought what a shame this isn't being recorded for a live album...however, being that his latest CD is a live performance from Chicago, it's not surprising that his live shows are so spot on perfect.

If you yearn for "folk-style" music, you've hit pay-dirt with William Fitzsimmons. He's pure gold!

    Bravo!

I even bumped into the guys right after the Show on the street where we had a little chat and I got the guitar pic from Joshua!!

  • Concert was cancelled last minute due to him being ill. They sent out an email and said refunds should be coming soon. Super bummed about it, though. I was really looking forward to the show. Hope to catch him next time.

  • I liked it even more than I thought I would.

Such gentle singing, but so powerful, by both William and Ally.

And William is hilarious, so it was like a 2 for 1 show; Music, and stand-up comedy btwn songs.
