Biography

  • Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan has carved out a place for herself as one of the most respected and influential adult contemporary artists to emerge in the 90s. She has gained fans from around the world due to her emotive balladry and unique vocal range.

McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 28 January 1968 and was adopted shortly after. During her early childhood she took vocal lessons and studied piano and guitar classically. At the age of 17 she fronted her high school band The October Game. The group had moderate success with their song “Grind” and gained immediate recognition during their first concert opening for the New Wave group Moev. Moev’s guitarist Mark Jowett was so impressed with McLachlan’s performance that he offered her a recording contract with Vancouver-based independent label Nettwerk.

Honoring her parent wishes McLachlan finished up high school and attended Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for one year before signing the contract with Nettwerk. Once she signed on with Nettwerk she issued her 1988 debut album “Touch”, which was both a critical and commercial success. Following it’s release she went on her first international tour supporting the band The Grapes of Wrath.

Her next studio album “Solace” came out in 1991 and is recognized as her breakthrough album into the Canadian mainstream. This album contained the hit tracks “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “Into the Fire”. This album was also the first of many projects to feature her long time collaborative partner Pierre Marchand.

“Solace” made McLachlan a star in Canada selling up to 200,000 copies; however, it was her follow up “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” that would make her an international craze. The album featured the hit single “Possession” and the UK and Japanese editions included a cover of “Blue” by fellow Canadian musician Joni Mitchell.

McLachlan launched her career into new territories with her 1997 album “Surfacing”. This release is her highest selling and most revered album to date and has won her numerous accolades. In 1998 she was awarded two Grammys: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Building a Mystery” and Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “Last Dance”. McLachlan also won 4 Juno awards with this album and has since sold over 16 million copies. This album also features her biggest single “Angel”, a song dedicated to keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, who had overdosed on heroin while touring with the Smashing Pumpkins for their album “Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness”.

McLachlan took a break from recording to focus on her family and her charity campaign (an organization which provided funding to disadvantageous children for music lessons). Her next studio album “Afterglow” did not come out until 6 years after “Surfacing”, but was a commercial success reaching No.1 on the Canadian album charts, No. 2 on the US Billboard 200, and no. 33 in the UK.

In 2004 McLachlan came out with the live album “Afterglow Live” and in 2006 she issued the Christmas album “Wintersong”, which contained eclectic covers such as John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and Joni Mitchell’s “River”. Her christmas offering received a Grammy nomination and debuted at No. 42 on Billboard 200 eventually reaching the No. 7 spot.

In 2008 McLachlan put out both a greatest hits album “Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan” and a rarities collection album “ B-Sides and Other Stuff Volume 2”. 7 years after the release of “Afterglow” she issued her proper studio follow up “Laws of Illusion”. This album proved that McLachlan still had not lost her stride. It debuted at No. 2 on the Canadian album charts and No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Inspired by the death of her father McLachlan released her 2014 album “Shine On”. It was her first album issued through Verve Records and following its release she embarked on a tour spanning across 30 cities.

Live reviews

  • I went with my sister to see Sarah McLachlan in concert a while ago. Even though it was a 6 hour drive to get there and I had to stay overnight, it was totally worth it.

I love Sarah McLachlan, for both her music and also for her ideas and her charity work. So going to the concert was not just a fun and beautiful musical experience but very powerful and meaningful to me.

Her voice has a clarity and purity that just can't come across on a record, and her stage presence is completely inspiring. Something also must be said for the band and the background singers, especially, they harmonized with Sarah McLachlan so perfectly and it sounded incredibly complex and layered.

The stage was set up to highlight Sarah without being obnoxious with the effects. The whole show was soothing in a way, but exciting at the same time.

The venue was pretty well packed and parking was kind of a pain to find but during the concert I forgot all about that. I left the concert feeling very much elated and wonderful and I simply can't wait until I'm able to see her again, since I've heard she's touring again this year.

  • Thank you so much Sarah McLachlan for your Montreal show at St-Denis theater. I was mesmerized by your strong voice, so good lyrics and hit songs, one after the other. The small venue and orchestra (1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drums and one keyboard player) made this the best night I could imagine to listen to Adia, I will remember you, building a mystery, angel, when she loved me, ice cream, song for my father and many more. I never saw her in a show before and I have to say BRAVO for her personal and intimate performance. Her voice was so strong and powerfull. I will go back to see her again when she is in town. That is how good the show was. I would recommend that show to any of her fan and new ones that wants to listen to powerfull lyrics about life, death, relationships and break-ups. I am not a softy but some songs brought tears in my eyes.... Raise my hat to the song writer, the performer and the professional singer that Sarah McLachlan is.

  • From the very first song, with just Sarah on the piano, her voice cut right through. The basic back line of musicians also meant that her voice was not at any point drowned out by the music. I'm always slightly concerned at live gigs about the performers' ability to deliver, & Sarah definitely did not disappoint. Every note was perfect, and her contagious charisma made you feel like you were just hanging out in her (very large) lounge room. Really awesome, heartfelt concert.

  • Sarah is the ultimate artist, So professional; a superb vocalist and an accomplished musician. Sarah has that magic that delivers a Superstar experience. Her lyrics are rooted in her most compelling life experiences so common to us all and enabling most to make that so important connection to her music, Adele may have repeated the success story but Sarah did it first and better.

  • Sarah McLachlan was amazing. She was very connected to the audience and even had a social media contest where some fans were able to sit on a couch on stage! She took photos with them and chit chatted with them. Also, she made it clear that she would play older songs as well as songs off her new CD. It was a great mix. The sound was amazing, she is one talented classy lady!

  • We have loved this artist for over 20 years. This concert was as good as the others we have attended. In fact her voice may be getting even better. She did a mix of old and new songs. I look forward to her next trip to Florida as we will surely make it a point to see her again. One of the best female performers of the last 30 years.

  • What an outstanding show, as always she was talkative with the audience and the play list was great, some new but a lot of old. The venue at the Capitol is comfortable and intimate.

    Thanks,
