Live reviews

  • Thievery Corporation

If you’ve heard of Thievery Corporation, it’s likely down to Zach Braff’s inclusion of them on the Garden State soundtrack, with the track ‘Lebanese Blonde’; a dramatic, brass-driven number with a mellow vocal that runs contrary to the instrumentation, it really only hints at the creative talents behind it. In fact, Thievery Corporation aren’t a band in the traditional sense; it’s the project of Washington D.C. musicians Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, who have spent the best part of twenty years making electronica and trip hop that incorporates a diverse range of musical influences; bossa nova, reggae, dub and acid jazz all included. Accordingly, their live shows play less like typical gigs and more like lavish celebrations of world music; a vast array of guest vocalists tend to take part, in order to translate their records as honestly as possible, and the same can be said for the instrumental side of things; whilst there’s a core band, with drums, bass and guitar taken care of, the palette is extended to all manner of weird and wonderful foreign sounds; a jazzy brass section, in particular, is key to the group’s aesthetic, as are the steel drums. They’re long overdue a return to the UK at this point; expect a veritable feast of international sounds should they ever make it back.

  • The concert was opened by a group called The Reminders. A husband-wife duo, they were able to warm up the crowd nicely with their reggae/hip-hop/world music style. Their set ended with me wanting to pull them up on Spotify or something as their message was very positive and unifying. Great job!

This was my first Thievery Corporation concert after discovering their music about 8 years ago. So to have my first concert to be their 20th anniversary tour, I was prepared to be amazed...and I was. I'm a huge fan because of their fantastic blend of DJ-ing and live band. It gets the blood pumping and the mood established. I could not imagine sitting down for a show like this and the folks did not! Covering classics like Amerimacka and newer pieces like Depth of My Soul, the rotations of singers kept me on my toes and looking forward to more. The only downside was that the music was so loud that it drowned out the vocal performers. I don't know if that is standard, but I would have liked to have heard them spit out those fabulous lyrics. It's a band strength.

The show was worth every penny. I hope they found Richmond welcoming. Can't wait to see them again!

  • Thievery Corporation is a bad ass group to begain with, it was my first time seeing them live. I had prepared for many months how this night should of been for me?

First, Let Me Say....Thievery Corporation was in fine style, sound was getting better and better unfortunately I was only there for over an hour until I could not re enter? I was hot, sweaty and getting the vibe, until I stepped outside to cool off, I was told I could not re enter? This is the first show ever in my life where no one could re enter? Like always, I change clothes during a certain point of any show cause of sweaty shirts? I was very disappointed with the venues security? I do know one thing!......Never will I go to Minneapolis to see a bad ass show like this? This was a venue strictly enforcing the rules? Why? I do not know? I drove 800 plus miles for an hour of show? Man how messed up in Minneapolis? Home is Washington state, and this no re entry thing doesnt exist in Seattle... I've never heard such a thing.....

  • The concert was fantastic! Not only did the band play songs from their new album, "The Temple of I & I", but they also played several of the classics ("Lebanese Blonde", "Sweet Tides") from their previous albums. The use of six different vocalists during the show highlighted the impressive range of genres within which the band comfortably works. The venue (The Tabernacle in Atlanta) was rather small, and at times the stage seemed a little crowded, especially when multiple vocalists were performing at the same time; but instead of detracting from the performance, the intimacy of the venue seemed to help emphasize the seamless way in which Thievery Corporation transitions so well from one genre to the next. So glad I got a chance to see them!

  • Awesome performance as always! Saw this show at the Tabernacle and the place was packed....in a good way. I love that this venue offers standing room tickets, because this is the kind of music that makes you mooooove! I danced all night and even went to the after party. Thievery breeds a certain type of crowd, full of love and good vibes. This is the one concert I go to by myself. I like how free the music makes me feel and don't need anyone holding me back. Everytime Thievery Corporation graces Atlanta with their prescence I am there.

  • Always wanted to see and hear them live and finally had the chance to do so. I travelled specifically from Dominican Republic to see that show and vacation at the same time. Been a fan of theirs since the first time I heard their “Mirror Conspiracy” album. They played for like 2 hours nonstop and me and my wife really enjoyed the concert’s tracklist progression. The only thing I’d say I would want in addition was to hear more material of their first albums. Besides that we loved that concert.

  • Boombox came out and said nothing just started to play. It took a few songs for them to find there groove. I love their early cds but live they just didn't live up to my expectations.

I really enjoyed thievery corporation, they played very well and had several singers come out for a couple songs each ...sang English French Spanish , they really were enjoyable to see live. sitar, drums pounding world beats galore

  • Great Show at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, CT. The Drummer also did a set of turntables at Stella Blues after the show and got to say "Hey" to Hash the bassist, told him he did an awesome show. There was supposed to be an after-party at Stell Blues, that didn't happen but I saw the bassist and drummer there briefly, however; the show as on point. That was on my bucket list, so I was happy to attend!

  • These guys know how to put on a show. If you've not seem them get tix for the next local show. While they are DJs at heart, their live show is something altogether different. The folks who play the instruments and do the vocals on their studio albums actually perform onstage below the DJ booth. Its a very nice mix of all types of world music. Go. See Them

  • Really cool show! It was definitely different and a interesting experiment. Bringing electronica and contemporary orchestra together had a really good vibe. And the show was entertaining the whole time with the constant changing of vocal artist. And the Kennedy Center made it a formal affair so every artist was in a suit or beautiful dress. 11/10
