Biography

  • Toro y Moi (born 7 November, 1986) - aka Chazwick Bradley Bundick - is a recording artist and producer from Columbia, South Carolina.

Bundick first started out his career in 2008. His music has included a range of different genres. Many people have linked him with the rise of the chillwave movement around 2010.

In his youth days, he went to Ridge View High School in Columbia, where he decided to put an indie rock band together called "The Taxi Chaps" with three of his school friends.

He went on to study graphic design at the University of South Carolina, but following his graduation, Bundick formed a musical friendship with chillwave artist Ernest Greene aka "Washed Out", that got him back into music.

In 2009 he was signed with Carpark Records and subsequently released his first full length album called "Causers of This" in 2010.

In 2013 he went on to released his third album called "Anything in Return", for which he mentioned influences from different types of house, including deep house and two-step styles. Bundick admitted that he wanted to mess around with a combination of elements and styles to create the album.

In support of his album he went on tour across North America and Europe, which ended in Vancouver. In February 2013, Toro y Moi was named as one of Fuse's thirty must see artists.

Live reviews

  • Toro y Moi

Toro y Moi brings on the funky R&B inspired beats that makes everyone on the dance-floor want to move.

Toro y Moi is the stage-name of Chaz Bundick who composes and produces all of his fresh, danceable groves. One of many things that makes Toro y Moi’s music so interesting is the diverse elements he mixes into his music, which include funk, R&B, and synthpop. Chaz Bundick also shows his interest in mixing elements through his choice of stage-name, Toro y Moi, which is a multilingual expression consisting of phrases in Spanish and French. This interest in mixing diverse elements together could have come from Chaz’s diverse upbringing having been raised by an African-American father and a Filipino mother. Toro Y Mo has been noted for helping form a new brand of genre labeled chillwave, which is noted for extensively blending the elements of effects processing, synths, and sampling. This style of music creates a washed over effect to the music that reminds one of relaxing at the beach on a sunny day.

Although Toro y Moi has features of his music that have a chill quality to it, he also has elements of the music that contain funky bass lines and punchy synth lines that make for great club music. When performing live, Chaz is often accompanied by a backing band consisting of a bass player, a drummer, and guitarist that help brighten the live sound of the performance. There are usually displays of atmospheric lights that wash over the stage creating a visceral like landscape, but then there are flashy lights that beam back and forth over this landscape that incites people to get up and dance.

Overall Toro y Moi puts on one chill performance with his deep melodic hooks and groovy bass lines that will keep the audience dancing with glee.

  • Chazwick Bradley Bundick, otherwise known by his stage name Toro Y Moi is responsible for some of the most innovative dance music of the past few years with his refreshing take on chill-wave. Supported by a tight live band, Toro does not rely on flash visuals or elaborate stage set-ups. His and the band's musicianship is enough to engage the crowd and the sheer range of genre and influence is an impressive display.

Starting with a trippy rendition of 'Rose Quartz', Toro moves through a selection of his favourite work quickly and keeps the audience moving along to his alt-dance sound. Only stopping to either introduce a song or thank the crowd for their enthusiasm, sat behind a keyboard on the festival stage he could not look more at home. A fantastic rendition of 'So Many Details' receives massive applause and sounds huge through the bass-heavy speakers that dot the stage to make sure every member of the crowd gets the same experience.

Bringing the set to a brisk finale with 'Low Shoulder' and 'Say That' this indie pop maker looks as though he could have performed all afternoon. Yet the audience must be content with the demonstration of innovation they were treated to.

  • It was a rainy day in Williamsburg, BK and the wind was unrelenting. Forget using an umbrella. Unless it was made from adamantium, it was not going to hold up. Despite the poor conditions, my friend and I made it to the venue, with the opening act (Astronauts, etc.) playing some good tunes. Beers were purchased and we made it to the left side of the concert floor.

The show claimed to be sold out but even when Chaz and Toro y Moi got on the play, the place never seemed packed. The music was great, the vibe was fun, and people were just in their own world listening to the sonic sounds of Toro.

Hall of Music Williamsburg is always a fun venue, as long as the act is worth checking out. Stick with the Tecate pounders, best beer deal available.

  • Excellent musiciens!

  • The show was energetic, beautifully filled with positive vibes which I wish he would have sung Bless or You & I which would have completed my experience. Can not wait to see him to hopefully come back next year with that same energy and vibes throughout the whole room yesterday night.

  • Awesome show as always. Threw in a couple covers this time. Love the slightly reworked versions of older songs. Wish we could have had some more, as Im not a super fan of the new material but it was still good.

Much better experience at the venue this time as well.

  • Great show! Mostly songs from the new album, What For? but there were some "classics" thrown in there. They were really together when it came to the sound and improvised on their tracks. Only downside was that the crowd seemed to lack energy...

  • Great concert....his music sounds amazing live and he changed up the songs a little to fit a live performance. 10/10. Even if you aren't that familiar with his music, still would be a great concert to attend
