What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depicting Gotham through bone-breaking punches rather than popping onomatopoeia, The Penguin is a grounded crime saga given gravitas by Colin Farrell and a scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.

Kelly Lawler USA Today It's a fully realized story all on its own, which is what every TV show should be, spinoff or not. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Craig Zobel has a strong grasp of The Penguin’s tone, keeping it shadowy but not grim where the characters’ psychic wounds drive all their choices and the action. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times "The Penguin” feels mechanical and recycled, constructed rather than imagined. Mob-movie clichés about honor and service are recited in lifeless dialogue and then recited again; the action often undercuts them but not in any witty or exciting way. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Erik Kain Forbes This isn’t really a Batman show, it’s a Gotham gangster series. This is The Sopranos with DC characters. Oct 15, 2024 Full Review Álvaro Onieva Fotogramas While it lacks the extra push to be at the top of a best-of list, The Penguin is sufficiently entertaining and well-made... [Full review in Spanish] Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Karl Puschmann New Zealand Herald While The Penguin doesn’t reach anywhere near the lofty heights of The Sopranos – few shows have – it’s still a thrillingly fun watch and miles better than what you may expect from a comic book TV show. BigDeez C Don’t get that excited- it’s more meh than great, at least thru episode 4. It’s no Sopranos. Best thing about it is the acting from Colin Ferrell. By episode 4 it’s going in an entirely different direction with the emphasis on Sophia and it’s not super interesting or realistic or believable, though her acting is excellent. The show is watchable but by no means revelatory. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Ana W I am utterly captivated by The Penguin on MAX/HBO, which delivers a gripping portrayal of the underground mob. Each episode delves deeper into the complex power dynamics, loyalty, and ambition at play. Colin Farrell's masterful performance as Penguin provides expert navigation through this treacherous world. The shared path is marked by tension, drama, and moments of levity, ensuring an enthralling viewing experience. The show's success is attributed to its exceptional performances, clever writing, and atmospheric direction, which skillfully balances action and character development to keep viewers invested. Powered by a tour-de-force performance from Cristin Milioti!!! Bravo!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Thoki and Nathan M Colin Farrell is simply incredible. This show slaps save for some pretty bad supporting acting from other cast members. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review J H Slow boring and predictable Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Craig C With only a fews show in this mastermind of a show weaves a tangled web that not even the Penguin knows he can escape from. But Oz, The Penguin, brilliantly manipulates everyone around him with a goal in mind and this show as me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. This is a must see show for anyone you like mob movies or stories and of course anyone you loves Batman. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review david o Casting, story, acting.
