Drafts lost their translated content

A number of saved drafts lost their translated blocks of text. At least one of them lost all translated content except the translated title. While the saved draft now holds no text, the dashboard reports that it is "18% translated, 73% mechanical translation" (although there is no mechanical translation in the pair en-el).

This also happened to me :(

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Hello @Geraki @Remux Much apologies for this problem. Can you please tell me the article names and the language source and target pairs, so that we can check? Thanks.

Drafts still loose their translated content, and it seems that they loose it while I am still on the Content Translation page.

While working in a translation, knowing that there could be a problem, I check at the top of the page that my progress is saved every time I finish some part of the translation. So usually, before I leave Content Translation I know that it reports that my "changes were saved".

It could be, that the saved content disappears when loading the draft in Content Translation, and while loading has not finished, the draft is saved again, saving blank parts on top of previously translated ones.

@أح Can you please tell me the name of the article you were translating and the languages? Thanks.

Geraki (talkcontribs)

In fact أح copied my message from above.

Example draft:

https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation?page=Historian&from=en&to=el&targettitle=Ιστορικός&draft=63810

I had translated the first two parts (image and introduction) and heading and a paragraph from another section. The introduction is now lost although the content below it is still there.

Another one:

https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation?page=21st Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Skanderbeg&from=en&to=el&targettitle=21η Ορεινή Μεραρχία Waffen-SS Σκεντέρμπεης&draft=63639

I had translated the three paragraph introduction.

The first two are now missing.

Interestingly, I had splited the translation of the third paragraph of the english original in two (leaving a new line) and now only the first half is still saved.

https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation?page=Emigration&from=en&to=el&targettitle=Αποδημία&draft=63566

Lost paragraphs are between other content that it still saved.

Hey, I see it is not only my problem with translated text blocks disappearing.

Man, it is annoying. I don't need any help for now. But this problem could seriously hit motivation for translations.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Hi @Sentalin sorry for the trouble. We are currently investigating the data loss that has been reported multiple times already. Tracking the source of the problem has been a challenge as there doesn't seem to be a very consistent pattern for the failures. We should be able to have more information soon about this. You can also follow the ticket where this is being discussed. We will highly appreciate any additional information that can help us narrow down the problem. Thanks.

Hi, @Runab WMF

Actually I found out that in my case ( I translate from English to Russian) it is happening because of red lines or paragraphs.

I mean, if I don't use Enter key to make new line, and new lines are formed automatically because of lack of space on the line where I write - everything is fine.

But, if I form new lines with hitting Enter key, then all text in this block after that will be lost.

Maybe other users have the same problem.

This also just happened to me. I was translating "Social Research" from English to Chinese. I have translated the first 11 paragraphs, the page freezes. After I re-load I lost 9 of the 11 paragraphs..

If you cannot salvage it I have to rage-quit...That's 9 hours of hard-work....

Santhosh.thottingal (talkcontribs)

Hi, We will surely investigate this issue. Just wanted to confirm if https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Research was the article you tried to translate. Because, that is a very small English article and does not have 9 paragraphs and we don't see it in our records. Did you mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_research? That article exist already in zhwiki. Were you trying to overwrite it? From our records, we see that a translation for 'Social research' was started and translator manually deleted it without publishing. So I am a bit puzzled here.

I also lost a few paragraphs of my translation of the Latvia article from en.wp to ro.wp. Not only that, but the paragraphs that were kept have lost their connection to the original, and it is now possible to retranslate those paragraphs.

Andrei Stroe (talkcontribs)

It exists, but as you can see, the content is very poor both quality- and quantity-wise. I am thoroughly warned about their existence, and choose to ignore the warning. In fact, it's a possible suggestion I could make: to get a different message if I'm translating over an article that is already linked with the original through Wikidata, than the one I would get when the existing article is either not linked with anything or linked with a different article in the original language.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

@Lemon166 @Andrei Stroe really sorry for this mess. We are trying to get to the bottom of this as soon as we possibly can.

Andrei Stroe (talkcontribs)

I suspect CX does not respond well to changes in the original article made during the translation. I think you should investigate the following use case: 1. A translation starts and a few paragraphs are translated; 2. Translation is saved; 3. The original article is significantly modified by adding, expanding, or removing parts of the already translated paragraphs, maybe even adding new images or paragraphs. 4. The translation is resumed.

I think that once a translation starts, the snapshot of the original has to stay fixed throughout the translation process. I don't know if it's a requirement, but it might solve many possible problems.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Thats one of the possibilities we thinking about. @Santhosh.thottingal is already looking into this. I am adding him to the conversation so that you can hear from him directly the solution that he is planning. Thanks.

Hello there!

yesterday I've lost almost whole translation of "Asymptotic Giant Branch" from English to Ukrainian.

While working in a translation, the top of the page every minute said that my progress was saved. However when I was almost finished, the page crushed and all the progress disappeared.

It seems you have published the article fully translated. Can you detail what exactly did you observe? If you go to your dashboard and click Published (Опубліковано) you should see the translation listed there.
