The Northern Kremisphere (also referred to as Donkey Kong Country[1] or Kong Country[2]) is the main setting and the overworld of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. It is located to the south of Donkey Kong Island, as the nearest mainland in that direction.[3] Kocos are said to patrol the waters of Donkey Kong Island,[4] despite only appearing in the region explicitly labeled the Northern Kremisphere. Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong travel to the Northern Kremisphere in both games. The name "Northern Kremisphere" is a pun on the Northern Hemisphere, the top half of the Earth, and the setting is inspired by Canada and northern European countries.

As evidenced by its landscape, the Northern Kremisphere is a broad region with a temperate to frigid climate. The Northern Kremisphere is different from the main overworld from each of the two previous Donkey Kong Country games because the Kongs have more freedom to explore the Northern Kremisphere map by swimming in its lakes, rather than just follow a set path between the worlds. They can also explore the map to find some secret caves. Dixie and Kiddy can rent watercraft from Funky's Rentals, as it is more effective for traveling on the water between the islands. There are many redwood and fir trees around the mountains, plateaus and plains alike. The Kremlings have polluted and industrialized some areas, such as Mekanos.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![edit]

Months after Crocodile Isle disappears from the map,[5] the mainland is invaded by Kremling remnants where they build their industrial bases.[6][7] When Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong go missing for two days, the entire mainland is dominated by the Kremling Krew where their robotic leader, KAOS, is created.[citation needed]

During the events of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, Dixie and Kiddy travel to the Northern Kremisphere in search of DK and Diddy. They travel through many worlds and eventually discover Krematoa, a secret island revealed from the depths of Northern Kremisphere's waters. Eventually, Dixie and Kiddy reach Kaos Kore, where they defeat KAOS and its creator, Baron K. Roolenstein, and rescue Donkey Kong and Diddy. After defeating Baron K. Roolenstein a second time, Dixie and Kiddy can rescue the Banana Queen, who then flies around the Northern Kremisphere map after Baron K. Roolenstein, who is riding a Hover Craft, and drops an egg on him.

The following locations appear in the Northern Kremisphere:

Donkey Kong Land III[edit]

In Donkey Kong Land III, Dixie and Kiddy return to the Northern Kremisphere to search for the fabled Lost World,[8] exploring different places than they had in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!:

Profiles[edit]

  • Player's Guide: There are eight areas to explore in the Northern Kremisphere. Not counting Bear cabins, Secret Caves or major baddie hangouts, that means you have over forty levels to conquer before finishing the game. Rumor has it — and it might just be simian senility — that Cranky Kong covered all the levels and found everything in five hours and fifteen minutes![9]
  • Nintendo Power vol. 89: Kong Country has changed quite a bit since your last adventure.[10]
  • Instruction booklet (Game Boy Advance version): There are nine areas to explore in this part of the world, not counting secret caves, Kremling hideout's and Brother Bear residences. That gives you over fifty levels to conquer before the end of your journey![11]

Trivia[edit]

  • According to the game's official Player's Guide, a supposed, in-universe rumor claims that Cranky Kong covered all of the levels in the Northern Kremisphere and found everything by five hours and fifteen minutes.[13] This is supported by the ranking seen in-game upon completing the game 103%.
