A Cat O' 9 Tails (also stylized as Cat o' 9 tails, Cat-O´-9-Tails,[1][2] Cat-O’-Nine-Tails,[3] and Cat 'O' Nine Tails[4]) is a type of enemy in Donkey Kong Country 2. Its name is derived from a type of whip known as the cat o' nine tails, possibly also deriving from the well-known saying of cats having "nine lives." Cat O' 9 Tails initially appear sitting in place, licking one of their paws. If a Cat O' 9 Tails notices Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, it begins to rapidly twirl and move around, attempting to whip both Kongs with its many tails. Being hit head-on usually damages the Kongs, but by jumping into one, they may instead end up caught in the tails. If the Kongs are caught by one of the tails as the Cat O' 9 Tails spins around, it flings them upwards,[5] allowing them to potentially obtain out-of-reach items while putting them in danger of hitting certain hazards. Cat O' 9 Tails are invulnerable while they spin around, but after several seconds, a Cat O' 9 Tails becomes dizzy, becoming vulnerable to being defeated from a stomp or a roll.

In the Game Boy Advance remake, a Cat O' 9 Tails' Scrapbook photo can be obtained by defeating a specific one in Fiery Furnace.[6]
