Jane Duran was born in Cuba to a Spanish father and an American mother. She was brought up in the United States and in Chile and after graduating from Cornell University she moved to England in 1966. Her work is often focused on the themes of memory and exile, and her poems have appeared in anthologies such as Poetry Introduction 8 (1993), Making for Planet Alice (1997), and in La Generacion del Cordero (2000).

Her first collection Breathe Now, Breathe (1995) won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and she has published three further collections since then: Silences from the Spanish Civil War (2002), Coastal (2006), and Graceline (2010). In 2005 she received a Cholmondeley Award.

Sorosis

Jane Duran worked in the Sorosis studio.

Sorosis Studio was funded by the New York Carol Club of Sorosis. The small, masonry studio was designed by F. Winsor, Jr., the architect who also designed Savidge Library (1926) and Mixter Studio (1927).
