On June 28th, Chargé d’Affaires Kimberly R. Furnish, OBO Principal Deputy Director J. Douglas Dykhouse, U.S. Northern Command Brigadier General Maurizio Calabrese, U.S. Mission personnel, and Bahamian officials, gathered during the Embassy Nassau’s July 4th celebration to recognize the near completion of the new U.S. Embassy Nassau in the Bahamas with a ribbon cutting ceremony. PDD Dykhouse remarked, "This new U.S. Embassy Nassau is the United States’ physical commitment to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and to the Caribbean region. From the construction contract signing in December of 2018 to a groundbreaking in October of 2019 and to the Topping Out Ceremony in July of 2021, we have worked through Hurricane Dorian and the COVID pandemic to get where we are today. This efficient and sustainable embassy will enable diplomacy. This is what providing the most effective facilities for U.S. diplomacy looks like." OBO integrates sustainability initiatives into all phases of the project lifecycle and asset management. Through the Energy Program, our innovative teams created a global utility vendor database. This utility vendor database allows the department to analyze and contact vendors for carbon pollution-free electricity options and helped Mission Japan and the Greening Diplomacy Initiative win a 2024 Presidential Federal Sustainability Award. https://lnkd.in/esX9kikn U.S. Department of State #greeningdiplomacyinitiative #presidentialfederalsustainabilityaward #greenenergy #cleanenergy #greendiplomacy

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar joined U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara Amy Scanlon, along with OBO Managing Director Richard Sullivan, Executive Director Shane Myers from the Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Mission personnel, and Mexican officials, at the formal dedication of the new U.S. Consulate General Guadalajara. The new consulate in Guadalajara, which will formally begin offering services to the public later this summer, is an important physical representation of the long-term commitment to the U.S.-Mexico relationship and a permanent presence in the region. Throughout the project, an estimated $66 million was invested in the local economy, and more than 1,880 Mexican workers were employed during its construction. The new facility not only meets the operational needs of the diplomatic mission but also serves as a model of innovation and responsible development in international diplomacy. Features include: ➕ Increased number of consular windows to better serve visitors and expedite services, ➕ Advanced energy and water-efficiency measures, including solar panels, a wastewater treatment system, innovative storm water management, drip irrigation, and drought-tolerant, native landscaping, ➕ Vibrant art installations throughout, and ➕ Outdoor overflow space shaded by natural palapas, paying homage to local traditions. Within similar timeframes, OBO has undertaken five major builds across Mexico: four new consulate facilities located in Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Merida, and Nogales, and a new embassy in Mexico City. With existing U.S. presence in Ciudad Juarez, Matamoros, Tijuana, Monterrey, and Nuevo Laredo, the new locations will total 10 diplomatic facilities in Mexico, reflecting the momentum of our collaborative efforts. OBO is celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month with an Employee Spotlight on Delories King, Project Manager for the Project Development and Coordination Division. Wah gwaan! Delories King coordinates the efforts of architects, engineers, subject matter experts, contractors, and end users in the South Pacific. Leadership, determination, hard work, integrity, and humanitarianism are essential qualities deeply rooted in her Caribbean heritage and family upbringing. She is a first-generation, Caribbean American, born to Jamaican parents. A Jamaican proverb says, “If you want good, your nose has to run,” meaning success requires hard work and effort, despite adversities. This wisdom emphasizes perseverance and dedication, which are vital in her work at OBO. Navigating through geopolitical changes, federal policies, climate changes, and cultural norms can be challenging, but it is exceedingly rewarding. Her Jamaican heritage has equipped Delories with the qualities needed to succeed both personally and professionally. Delories is passionate about connecting with people and experiencing other cultures. While growing up in a diverse neighborhood, she was surrounded by families from all over the world. Parents, who spoke no English, relied on their children to help them navigate their new lives in the United States. When playing outside as a child, if you got hungry or thirsty, you could stop at a friend’s house. Her grandmother always said, “Everyone is someone’s child. Be kind always. If you have something, share it. This is how we honor God.” Within her multicultural community, she learned Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, and certain phrases in Indian and African dialects. She was introduced to a variety of cuisines with deep flavors. These experiences instilled a deep appreciation for diversity, which aligns with Jamaica’s national motto, “Out of many, one people.” Thank you to OBO's DEIA Council for coordinating this Employee Spotlight.
