Around 96% of the #Gaza population is facing acute levels of hunger, including an estimated 49,300 pregnant women who face a constant struggle to keep themselves and their unborn children alive. A #ceasefire, safe, sustained, and unhindered access to humanitarian aid is the only way to end this suffering.
About us
UNFPA’s Arab States Regional Office, based in Cairo, supports the work of 15 UNFPA country offices, covering a total of 20 countries and territories in the Arab region. UNFPA’s regional office ensures that the objectives, programs and messages of the organization across the region are coherent and in line with UNFPA’s global priorities of ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Advisors and specialists at the regional office closely support country offices by providing advice and technical expertise, as well as helping draft policies in the fields of family planning, maternal health, child marriage, female genital mutilation, gender-based violence, human rights & gender equality, census, and demographic dividend. The regional team keeps track of the progress and challenges that the organization encounters in the Arab region, and advises on how to adjust UNFPA’s approach to respond to the challenges.

UNFPA Arab States reposted this
“Our prenatal service point is based in the sand,” says Dr. Mohamed Ragab. “We need to be in the camp to be closer to the pregnant women and relieve pressure on the hospital.” Meet Dr. Ragab, a gynecologist and obstetrician whose dedication and compassion knows no bounds. He previously worked at the Nasser Medical Complex in #Gaza, but he has transferred his desk, equipment and examination bed to a makeshift tent in a displacement camp providing care to as many as 70 pregnant women daily. Among his patients is Heneenn Baraka, a 30-year-old woman in her eighth month of pregnancy. Despite having been displaced, alongside her 2 children, 5 times since October, Heneenn was able to access medical care thanks to Dr. Ragab. “I am very tired,” she explains. “I mean, a pregnant woman is naturally tired during pregnancy while she is in her own home, let alone when she lives on the sand with life like it currently is.” In Gaza, women face significant challenges accessing adequate pre- and postnatal care due to ongoing conflict, the destruction of health facilities and limited medicines and personnel. Canada is working with global partners to provide humanitarian assistance to women and girls in #Gaza and the West Bank. Share this post to spread awareness. “The scale, scope, and duration of humanitarian crises are rapidly growing while resources are falling short. This is placing the assistance we provide, which is #irreplaceable to the people we serve, at serious jeopardy” Laila Baker, UNFPA Arab States Regional Director, during a panel discussion on ‘Humanitarian diplomacy and the enhanced role of women and youth’ at DIHAD Conference and Exhibition 20th edition. #DIHAD20TH
