Protection Alert! The North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area is growing. We are proud to have partnered with The Conservation Fund and TennGreen Land Conservancy to protect 709 acres within the Cumberland Plateau region of the Central Appalachians in Tennessee. This newly protected land holds immense conservation significance due to its high terrestrial, aquatic and subterranean biodiversity, and its location within a matrix of more than 250,000 acres of public recreation lands. The parcel, which borders the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area, will be incorporated into the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s management plan for the WMA to ensure its conservation for future generations. The Nature Conservancy is proud to be the lead partner on a new $400,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant, funded by the Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE)! The project will work with federal, state and local partners to produce a nature-based tourism asset inventory and prioritized list of outdoor recreation infrastructure needs on publicly accessible lands across the tri-state Cumberland-Pine Mountain corridor of Tennesse, Kentucky and Virginia. Heather Furman, Director of TNC’s Appalachians Program, says, “The Nature Conservancy is eager to improve access to public lands in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, vital parts of the Appalachians region, with support from this award and partners. This investment expands opportunities for everyone to benefit from spending time outdoors while enhancing the resilience of nearby communities and natural places.” Read more: https://nature.ly/4fHYoG6 📸: The Cumberland Forest properties sit in the epicenter of elk reintroduction efforts in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Today, Middle Fork Bottoms, located in Madison County along the Middle Fork of the Forked Deer River, became Tennessee’s newest state park. Congratulations Tennessee State Parks! 🎉 A true testament to the power of collaboration and conservation, The Nature Conservancy has had the privilege of implementing this project since 2016 alongside the West Tennessee River Basin Authority and Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. Once highly eroded farmland, this area has been transformed into a haven for plants and animals, featuring beautiful lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Some of our Tennessee and Appalachians staff recently visited with Conservation Fisheries Inc. (CFI) at their facility to explore ways we can grow our conservation partnership. The Nature Conservancy is working across the Appalachians to restore habitat for aquatic species and CFI specializes in propagating and releasing rare fish back into restored habitats. It is a wonderful joint effort, and we see lots of opportunity for collaboration. #WildlifeWednesday #thenatureconservancy #freshwater #conservation #appalachians
