Did you know that only 5% of remaining grasslands worldwide are protected? This makes grasslands the planet’s most imperiled landscape. The Nature Conservancy Global Board Chair, Bill Frist, M.D., just penned another powerful piece for Forbes this week. This article highlights how grassland restoration work happening globally is reversing the decline of these viral habitats. Prioritizing these unique ecosystems is central to the health and well-being of our people, our native species, and our planet. If you’re curious about grasslands and restoration efforts, we encourage you to read Senator Frist’s article. It provides insights into this critical work happening on the ground here in Tennessee and beyond. #thenatureconservancy #conservation #grasslands #grasslandrestoration https://lnkd.in/eGx6VTGW

We're working to accelerate renewable energy AND minimize impacts to wildlife, communities and nature. A new report from The Nature Conservancy called Mining the Sun shows how mine lands and brownfields can supply a significant amount of clean energy to power homes across the U.S. Early in the report is a feature on our Cumberland Forest project that spans 253,000 acres of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. This massive project includes 40,000 acres of former coal mining lands that are in a non-forested condition. So far, 1,000 acres are slated to go into construction to generate 130 megawatts of energy—among the very first solar projects being developed on former mined lands in Central Appalachia. Read the report for how developing solar and wind energy on former mines can: ☀️ Accelerate the clean energy transition 💰 Reduce costs for building renewable energy 👥 Serve communities 🌱 Protect natural and agricultural lands https://lnkd.in/gNADz2_V

The Nature Conservancy's Global Board Chair, Bill Frist, M.D.., just penned a powerful piece for Forbes that covers the significance of wetland ecosystems and includes frequent nods to our beautiful state. His words not only highlight the crucial role wetlands play in our environment but also underscore the urgent need for their protection. We're immensely grateful for Senator Frist's unwavering advocacy for Tennessee's natural treasures and his steadfast support for The Nature Conservancy's mission. 🌎 Read the full article below: https://lnkd.in/e39YSgZE
A pivotal Supreme Court decision has moved the future of our #wetlands into states’ jurisdictions, creating an opportunity for states to protect this natural habitat in their own backyards – but also creating a risk of permanent ecosystem loss if lawmakers and voters don’t recognize their value. My latest op-ed in Forbes shares more: https://lnkd.in/eWMGvuXa Personally, I didn’t think much about wetlands while growing up in the city of Nashville. But for the past 10 years after my wife Tracy and I moved to land in more rural Williamson County with a meandering creek, floodplains, and the bordering Harpeth River, I have gained a much more complete understanding of, and appreciation for, how wetlands are fundamental to life’s delicate ecological balance. And thus, vitally important to you and me. #conservation The Nature Conservancy The Nature Conservancy in Tennessee

🚨 Breaking News! American Rivers just listed the Duck River as one of the #MostEndangeredRivers of 2024. Each year, this list shines a spotlight on clean water threats not just to rivers, but to streams, wetlands and rivers all across the country; the water that eventually finds its way into your kitchens, becoming the drinking water for you and your family. The Duck River, right here in middle Tennessee is among the top three most biodiverse rivers in the world, however demand for its water is rapidly outpacing what the river can sustainably provide. Unfortunately, excessive water withdrawals threaten its invaluable biodiversity and long-term use by local communities for recreation, drinking water, industry, and agriculture. Here in Tennessee we are excited about the U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act advancing! Find out more below: #thenatureconservancy #localtoglobal #conservation #policy https://lnkd.in/dEcdSpps
Big news! The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted today to advance the U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act. This is an exciting step forward for protecting nature worldwide and creating a safer and more secure planet for all. 🌍 Long-term, sustainable financing for the conservation of threatened lands and bodies of water would, in turn, stimulate economic growth and empower local and indigenous communities. Protecting nature isn’t just good for the U.S. and the health of our planet, it can also advance national security interests. Legislation that helps to unlock the potential of the private sector as a multiplier effect to public funding is a must. I recently penned an article for Fortune with Bill Frist, M.D. on this and other key actions we would like to see from Congress for people and nature – give it a read. ⬇
