It’s back to school season, and we’re excited to announce that The Nature Conservancy in Pennsylvania, in partnership with The School District of Philadelphia, has received a $1 million grant to implement green stormwater infrastructure at four Philadelphia elementary schools. Currently, these sites are largely asphalt and concrete schoolyards, but they will soon be transformed into high-performance green spaces featuring rain gardens, shade trees, pollinator habitats, and vegetable gardens. This project is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law through the Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund, supporting community-driven initiatives. Together with our partners, we’re creating vibrant outdoor learning environments and engaging the next generation of environmental stewards – all while making our cities greener, healthier, more equitable, and resilient places to live. A big thank you to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for highlighting this important work in a recent blog post. Land Steward Elizabeth Hanson and Summer intern Qhelani Moyo spent a lot of time this summer battling mile-a-minute weed at The Hamer Woodlands at Cove Mountain. Mile-a-minute weed (Persicaria perfoliata) is an invasive species that grows rapidly, forming dense mats that crowd out native plants. By removing it, we create space for native species to thrive. Native species are crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. They provide food and habitat for local wildlife, support pollinators, and help prevent soil erosion. By promoting native plants, we enhance biodiversity and ensure the resilience of our natural landscapes. 📸: Elizabeth Hanson/TNC

We are excited to share highlights from the first-ever PA Certified Prescribed Burn Manager course! During this three day course, 27 dedicated students learned the skills necessary to safely and effectively conduct low complexity prescribed fires. This training is a significant step forward in maintaining and restoring healthy ecosystems through the use of prescribed fire on private lands. A huge thank you to our partners: the Pennsylvania Prescribed Fire Council, DCNR Bureau of Forestry, Pennsylvania Game Commission, Tall Timbers, and Penn State Extension for their invaluable support in making this program a success. 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 Clean energy projects like wind and solar on degraded lands, such as old coal mines and brownfields, not only repurpose unused areas but also bring significant environmental and economic benefits. These include job creation and increased tax revenue for coal communities. Using degraded lands for clean energy is a natural fit for what we call the “3Cs” - 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. We can achieve clean energy solutions that benefit communities and conservation efforts while reducing climate pollution.
