We work across Missouri and beyond to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.

About us

Since 1956, The Nature Conservancy has worked in Missouri to conserve the lands and waters that we all depend on. We have seen a lot during that time, but the most obvious is this: No matter the place or situation, everyone has an interest in ensuring that people and nature thrive. Our task has been to eliminate the barriers that stand in the way. Fortunately, finding innovative solutions is what we do best. That means digging in, literally, to rebuild riverbanks that protect drinking water for small towns and habitat for vulnerable wildlife. It means providing lawmakers the science-based information they need to make the best decisions for Missouri. It means stepping up to support local schools as they turn asphalt lots into imagination-boosting, water-filtering natural playgrounds. We know the risks of doing nothing. The effects of a changing climate and rapidly declining biodiversity are already altering Missouri in ways that affect the health, economy and well-being of the state. But we also know that nature is resilient and that Missourians are working every day toward solutions. We are proud to work alongside them, collaborating every step of the way. We know that approach works. We see the results.

  • There are 95,000 farms in Missouri, second most in the United States—and that makes agriculture one of our greatest opportunities for conservation. More than 90% of the farms here are family owned, and the nearly 28 million total acres devoted to agriculture in Missouri cover two-thirds of the state. The Nature Conservancy works with Missouri’s growers as well as our conservation partners to put sustainable practices into action. • Finding innovative ways to work with nature is a powerful strategy for people and conservation. When devastating floods hit Atchison County, Missouri, in 2019, residents pulled together in search of a solution. The Nature Conservancy and our partners supported the community in a truly collaborative project that moved five miles of the levee inland from the Missouri River, reconnecting more than 1,000 acres of floodplain. Now, the community is safer, birds and other wildlife are flocking to the expanded habitat and the river has room to move. Thank you to KMOS PBS for featuring Rob Hunt, TNC’s Missouri director of resilient waters, in telling this important story! https://lnkd.in/ewwZSkHM

  • “I spent most of my childhood in a concrete jungle. When I moved to southern Illinois for the university, I found myself immersed in nature and loving it. "Humans have seriously impacted the landscape, and with it, the habitat of our flora and fauna. This is what made me want to work for The Nature Conservancy, where I spend most of my days working on forest stand improvement projects and assisting with prescribed fire operations for habitat rehabilitation. It is hard work, but it is equally rewarding, often punctuated by the increase or return of a conservative species that needs conditions to be just right to persist. "Putting in a hard day of work outside to maintain and restore ecosystems feels as close to our natural world as one can get and is my favorite part of the job.” —Megan Alkazoff, fire and stewardship coordinator for TNC in Missouri Read more about how TNC uses nature-based solutions, including prescribed fire, to protect biodiversity: https://lnkd.in/efdtnmNZ
