Catalyzing innovation and economic growth through technology commercialization and strategic research partnerships
About us
The NOAA Technology Partnerships Office (TPO) is a research support office that drives innovation across NOAA. TPO oversees two programs: the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Technology Transfer Program. Through its programs, TPO awards grants to small businesses to support technological innovation, manages NOAA’s intellectual property portfolio, helps transfer NOAA technology to the commercial market, and facilitates NOAA’s public-private research partnerships. As NOAA’s primary interface with private-sector innovation, TPO supports the NOAA mission, stimulates innovation, and strengthens the U.S. economy.

NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and United Airlines have announced an agreement to equip a Boeing 737 with a sophisticated instrument package that will measure greenhouse gases and other pollutants during domestic flights. It’s a first step in establishing a partnership that could significantly improve monitoring of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases, as well as improving the accuracy of weather forecasts in the United States. The Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), was announced yesterday at the The White House Super Pollutants Summit held in Washington D.C. #partnerships #greenhousegases #climate NOAA Research NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory NOAA press release - https://lnkd.in/eM8TFpgj White House Fact Sheet - https://lnkd.in/dzCewUTk Learn more about NOAA CRADA Partnerships - https://lnkd.in/dWhScJxZ
Immensely proud of today’s announced Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration & United Airlines to equip an ✈️ with tech to measure greenhouse gases and other pollutants during domestic flights. "This collaboration represents a significant leap forward in U.S. efforts to monitor and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions," said Sarah Kapnick, Ph.D., NOAA’s chief scientist. “We’ll be collecting data over multiple cities multiple times a day, in different seasons, and under varying weather conditions,” said Colm Sweeney, who leads GML’s commercial aircraft program. Combining vertical greenhouse gas and weather profiles from instruments on commercial aircraft with satellite observations would create a continuous monitoring system in the United States. NOAA and Saildrone recently kicked off this year's hurricane season with early monitoring of Hurricane Beryl as it turned into a major storm. See video footage taken inside the storm from Saildrone's Explorer, and learn more about NOAA's partnership with Saildrone here: https://lnkd.in/e6WDgcVq
Saildrone and NOAA kicked off the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Mission early this year, with Saildrone Explorer SD-1041 intercepting the edge of Hurricane Beryl about 100 nm south of Puerto Rico. As it approached the northern edge of the then category 5 hurricane, SD-1041 experienced increased windspeeds and significant wave height, along with a decrease in pressure and several rapid decreases in air temperature from associated rain bands. Data snapshot of the intercept: 📉Lowest pressure measured: 1009.67 hPa 🌊Largest sustained waves observed: 7.79 m 💨Strongest winds measured: 43.6 kts sustained, gusts 53.48 kts SD-1041 is one of 12 Explorers in the mission this summer to do hurricane research this season. Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) NOAA Research Note: The wind gusts stated in this video were actually 34.78 kn. The sustained winds were 28.4 kn.
