We are still looking back at the engaging week we had at American Public Health Association, marked by meaningful presentations, strong session attendance, and professional recognition. Our sessions showcased key partnerships and innovative work, sparking valuable discussions and positive feedback. We’re thankful for the opportunity to contribute to and learn from the public health community.

SUHI had a rewarding experience at American Public Health Association last week, featuring engaging presentations, prestigious awards, and lots of networking! Our session on our partnerships with Health & Medicine Policy Research Group and the Cook County Department of Public Health drew over 60 attendees. SUHI’s Kim Jay was honored as “CHW of the Year” and Jamison Merrill earned a student award from the Epidemiology Section. We’re proud of our team for representing SUHI so well!

Last week at APHA, SUHI’s own Kim Jay received the prestigious “CHW of the Year” award for her dedication to empowering CHWs and those who mentor, supervise, and support them. Kim shared, “I feel honored and blessed to be recognized by my peers. So often the work we do goes unnoticed, but this acknowledgment inspires me to push even harder. Health First Collaborative (HFC) is an incubator and amplifier of community-driven ideas that have the potential to transform health. This funder and community collaborative aims to strengthen public health infrastructure for long-term recovery and resilience. SUHI was awarded a grant from Michael Reese to conduct an evaluation of HFC’s collective impact approach and support the development of the Community Advisory Council co-governance. Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our Sinai Urban Health Institute team proudly wore pink to show our support for the #SinaiPink campaign and to raise awareness for breast health. So far in 2024, Health and Healing for Life (HHL) CHWs navigated 360 clients to breast, cervical, and colorectal services, unavailable to them without HHL. Over 93% of the 136 clients with financial barriers were assisted, enabling them to receive screening, and an additional 350 people received breast, colorectal, and cervical health education from CHWs. #PublicHealth #SUHIChicago #BreastHealth #CommunitySupport
