Northeastern University MPH Program held its inaugural Charlotte campus residency led by Neil Maniar, PhD, MPH, Director & Professor, Master of Public Health Program, Gibbie Harris, Visiting Clinical Professor and former Mecklenburg County Public Health Director, and Allyson Hudson, MPA, MPH, CTTS, Program Manager. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn from leading professionals and build relationships with peers, faculty, and community members. In the classroom, Dr. Maniar and Ms. Harris discussed the public health response to COVID-19 in Boston and North Carolina and students put their problem-solving skills to the test by developing solutions to a community issue in the Hack-a-Thon Challenge. In the community, local organizations supported the residency by opening their doors and involving students in workshops and panels. Last Tuesday, Northeastern University hosted "Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Innovation in Public Health Technology," a summit bringing together policy, research and industry leaders to help shape how the latest advancements, challenges, and prospects in technology can advance global health. Keynote speakers included Rear Adm. Susan Blumenthal, M.D., former U.S. assistant surgeon general and White House adviser; and Renee Wegrzyn, director of the newly established U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). Dr. Aarti Sathyanarayana Featured in Center for Research Innovation Article Dr. Aarti Sathyanarayana, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Health Sciences, has been featured in the Northeastern Center for Research Innovation’s article, “A Pioneering New App for Mental Health Care: with Spark Fund Awardee Aarti Sathyanarayana.” “I’ve seen firsthand the strain that our students go through and the toll that takes on their mental health, and the pandemic has made that even worse,” says Aarti Sathyanarayana, Assistant Professor at Northeastern and Director of the Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence for Time Variant Health Data Laboratory (SATH Lab). The team’s work in mental health care has earned them selection as one of the six Fall 2023 Spark Fund awardees. Two of our faculty have been recognized by Northeastern University, Bouvé College of Health Sciences for their excellence in teaching and scholarship. John Olawepo is the recipient of the 2024 Bouvé Distinguished Educator Award in the Undergraduate Category. This award recognizes that outstanding teaching goes beyond the classroom and includes the long-term impact that faculty have on students. Deborah Milbauer, MPH, MSW, CPH is the recipient of the 2024 Kenerson Faculty Scholarship Award. This award recognizes a Bouvé faculty member who has shown a commitment to improving the health of people in the urban community through interdisciplinary research and teaching activities.
