As Earth’s average global temperature rises, the number of extreme weather events — including drenching rain, severe floods, and heat waves — is climbing, too. Those risks are becoming real for event organizers, in Canada and elsewhere, said event sustainability expert Shawna McKinley, principal at Clear Current Consulting in Vancouver, Canada, who is tracking extreme weather and its impact on events. In addition to consulting for clients including TED and the Canadian Medical Association, McKinley has taught a class about sustainable event management operations at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) for the last decade. She initially began building a database filled with case studies of events disrupted by extreme weather for class discussion, and as students have asked deeper questions about how climate change affects events and what to expect in the future, McKinley’s data collection and analysis has grown more extensive, she told 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦. Last year, in an effort to give her students a greater sense of the scope and scale of extreme weather’s impact on events and how it could impact the future, McKinley decided to conduct an in-depth analysis of events in Canada that were disrupted by extreme weather in 2023. Her research asked two questions, McKinley wrote in the report “Extreme Weather and Event Planning Risks in Canada,” published in May: “How are events being affected by unusual and severe weather in Canada and how are event organizers responding?” Continue reading the article by Barbara Bruns Palmer - https://lnkd.in/d5Q-K66C #PCMAConvene #EventProfs #Sustainability #ClimateChange

Last year, a Reddit user who was helping to plan for a booth at a conference asked the online academic community on the social website for suggestions on swag. “We are trying to come up with swag people will actually like/keep,” she posted. “Ideas?” More than 100 people shared details on the best swag they had ever received. A Swiss army knife was the favorite swag of one user, and he begged the original poster: “Please no more: bags, pens, water bottles, shitty plastic flashlights, lanyards, mugs, or buttons.” While there were plenty of responses that echoed his sentiment to eschew cheap tchotchkes, there was only one solitary community member who brought up sustainability. “90% will end up in the trash, so I’d say none or opt for consumables,” she wrote. 🤞𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝. 🤔 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝. 😟𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭. 💡These were the three constructs used by 100 C-suite executives and event team leaders to navigate seven disruption scenarios during “Future-Proofing the Events Industry,” a PCMA Executive Leadership Summit. The participants were invited to workshop solutions to challenges presented at the summit, held in conjunction with PCMA Convening Leaders 2024 in January in San Diego, by responding in ways that ranged from easy-to-execute to “just so crazy they may just work.” ✈️ The first scenario presented: “A No-Fly Zone.” Participants were asked to consider the following: Worries about air travel’s contribution to global CO2 emissions 🌍are prompting organizations to consider curtailing air travel for employees to attend meetings and events and consider digital-only options. How would you build a proactive plan to address these concerns? 📋 Find the highlights from the conversation in Michelle Russell's article: https://lnkd.in/dey3HRqt #PCMAConvene #EventProfs #CL24
