In last week’s speaker series, Dr. Nadiyah Johnson and Dr. Kevin Chovanec shared how to create a framework for implementing large language models (LLMs) in specific disciplines. “We must make sure we can understand how large language models work and how they make their recommendations. We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Marquette University President Michael Lovell, who served on the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute’s Executive Steering Committee since our launch in 2018. Jonathan Stark, Ed.D., executive director of the NMDSI, reflects on the profound legacy Dr. Lovell leaves behind, “Dr. Lovell inspired many to live life with purpose and conviction. He was instrumental in forming the initial partnership between Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Northwestern Mutual. He will be remembered for his steadfast commitment and advocacy of such collaborations – and we thank him for helping establish the NMDSI as a leading corporate-academic partnership in Southeastern Wisconsin.
