  • Established by Dr. Robert Zubrin and others in 1998, The Mars Society is the world’s largest and most influential space advocacy organization dedicated to the human exploration and settlement of the planet Mars. The mission: educate the public, media and government on the benefits of exploring Mars and creating a permanent human presence on the Red Planet. From May 29 to June 1, the society is hosting the University Rover Challenge (URC), the world's premier robotics competition for college students. The event is held annually in the desert of southern Utah while challenging student teams to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers. This year, the Nissan Advanced Technology Center – Silicon Valley (NATC-SV) is a sponsor for the event. “I’m thrilled that we’re sponsoring the Mars Society University Rover Challenge,” said Dr. Maarten Sierhuis, vice president and global director of the Nissan Advanced Technology Center – Silicon Valley. “It’s the kind of STEM event that brings together talented young STEM people from all over the world who are interested in space exploration. One reason we want to support this event is that we’re always looking for great talent, and I want participants to feel welcome to reach out and become potential interns or even future hires.” Learn more about the University Rover Challenge: https://lnkd.in/g2Ni6PGD

  • Did you know? 🤔 Researchers at the Nissan Advanced Technology Center – Silicon Valley (NATC-SV) develop fundamental algorithms to study: 🏙 scene understanding 🚶♀️ road user prediction 🚗 trajectory planning Prediction and planning algorithms are required to produce human-like behavior in challenging real-world scenes. These range from high-speed highway driving to nuanced low-speed city scenes with pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. • How do you turn raw data into real change? 🤔 Data analytics is a method that uses tools, technology and processes to unearth problems and find answers. Our researchers crunch numbers to identify problems and invent new solutions. 💡 Take sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, drowsy drivers are involved in around 100,000 crashes per year in the United States, resulting in an estimated 71,000 injuries and over $12.5 million in damages. Could better sleep lead to safer roads? Taken a step further, what if we could improve a driver's focus, reaction time and decision-making ability through targeted brain stimulation? 🧠 Renowned sleep expert Dr. Matthew Walker and Nissan UX Innovation manager Dr. Lucian Gheorghe are studying the issue. They’re finding ways to help people get a better night’s rest – which could lead to more alert drivers and safer roads. 🙏 Learn about the results of their research into the benefits of better sleep – and the connection between rest and overall brain performance: https://lnkd.in/gdTCQUQ3
