Given the current technology issue affecting about 24,000 organizations, many organizations have begun to implement manual workarounds for critical functions that rely upon the affected systems. In support of this, financial services institutions, healthcare organizations, and organizations across industries are struggling to shift to manual processes, primarily due to a lack of training or as a result of being short staffed. While IT is managing through the technical aspects of this situation, the business should take the opportunity to resort to their Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) and, if they don’t have them, consider quickly conducting a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) light to understand which functions cannot lapse for an extended period or a tabletop exercise to help identify gaps in their capabilities. Specifically, consider the following: 1. Identify Critical Functions: Quickly determine which business functions are critical to operations. Focus on processes that are essential for delivering products or services and maintaining compliance. 2. Implement Temporary Workarounds: Establish temporary manual processes for critical functions. For example, if your digital invoicing system is down, consider switching to paper-based invoicing to ensure continuity. 3. Communicate with Stakeholders: Inform employees, customers, and partners about the issue and the steps you are taking to address it. Clear communication helps manage expectations and maintain trust.

  • CrowdStrike and Microsoft have acknowledged a global issue affecting nearly every organization using CrowdStrike’s EDR on Windows. The issue, which appears to be the result of a faulty driver update (affecting the C-00000291*.sys files), causes affected systems to present the dreaded “Blue Screen of Death.” While the root cause of this event remains under investigation, the impact of this case has been compared to 2017’s WannaCry incident, in which systems around the world were hit by ransomware using Nation-State tradecraft. Regardless of the underlying technical facts, the result is undeniably similar to a global ransomware deployment. Healthcare, airports, municipalities, and systems all over the world have crashed and brought with them chaos, frustration, and fear. Unlike a global ransomware deployment, however, there’s no guarantee that paying will make the pain go away. A fix to the issue has been made public but is facing widespread concern for being manual and unscalable. That fix, which can be found in our first comment below, requires booting the machine in safe mode and manually deleting the guilty file. For large or remote enterprises, the idea of manually fixing many thousands of end-user machines is daunting.  MorganFranklin’s cybersecurity practice is ready to help your organization respond to and recover from this event. Whether it’s rapidly pulling together a response plan, mobilizing your team to perform at-scale remediation, or better preparing for future events, we’re here to help. Feel free to connect with any of our experts including Tamara Long Nolan, CBCP, Joseph Perry, Brandon Townsend, CBCP, and Jered Gordner for more information.

Cyber & Operational Resilience Practice Leader

As I approach my third year with Cybersecurity l MorganFranklin Consulting , I reflect on my experiences over the past 25 years. After 2.5 decades in the same field, you learn that the work (if you can call something you love doing so much "work") is very similar, regardless of the company. In addition to serving my clients and helping them enhance their cyber & operational resilience posture, what really energizes me is the group of people with whom I work. From high level leadership that provides the perfect balance of guidance and support to colleagues and teammates who are always willing to lend a hand, a company's culture is what makes the real difference. Proud to be part of a team that feels like family. "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." - Steve Jobs
