We are proud to announce the McKinsey Health Institute has joined a formal collaboration with the World Economic Forum's Healthy Workforces initiative, committing to achieve healthier, happier workforces around the globe and improve the holistic health of employees, their families, and their communities. The Healthy Workforces Initiative empowers organizations and communities to prioritize and support physical and mental health in the workplace, encouraging a more productive, resilient, and healthy global workforce. Our research has quantified the major potential health and economic opportunity of investing in employee health — a $3.7 to $11.7 trillion opportunity globally. As part of the initiative, we will help raise awareness and deepen collective understanding of the importance of healthy workforces, and promote an evidence-based approach to helping more employees — and by extension, society — to achieve optimal health. About us
This is a decisive moment in the history of human health. Over the last century, society has made incredible progress in extending life. But while life expectancy has increased, so has the amount of time spent in moderate to poor health. And significant inequities persist both across and within countries. It’s time to set a more ambitious aspiration. An aspiration for everyone on the planet to add years to their lives and life to their years. Humanity mobilized against COVID-19 at a speed and scale previously unseen. While far from perfect, our successes should inspire us to challenge what we think is possible. At its best, our response to COVID-19 demonstrates that when resources and motivation coalesce, scientific breakthroughs, and large-scale behavior change are possible in very short periods of time. The McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) is an enduring, non-profit-generating entity within the firm. It was founded on the conviction that, over the next decade, humanity could add as much as 45 billion extra years of higher-quality life (roughly six years per person on average—and substantially more in some countries and populations). MHI’s mission is to catalyze the actions needed across continents, sectors, and communities to realize this possibility.

In the US, cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is the leading cause of death for women —accounting for at least a third of the women's health gap. The McKinsey Health Institute's new report highlights how a lack of data and inequities between women and men in care delivery and efficacy contribute to these disparities, as well as opportunities and actions needed to improve women's heart health. With the right actions, we could unlock at least 1.6 million years of higher-quality life and boost the US economy by $28 billion annually by 2040. This week, Stanford University School of Medicine and McKinsey Health Institute co-hosted “Realising the Potential of AI in Health” – a forward-looking conversation with more than 80 senior leaders across healthcare, life sciences, health tech, investment, and tech exploring how AI can help add years to life and life to years for billions globally. Experts in life sciences, healthcare, and academia weighed in on the promise of this new era. From accelerating drug discovery, improving our understanding of human biology, and easing administrative burdens to providing expert decision support to health care workers and individuals, the potential for AI to enable better health is enormous. To harness it well, experts say, we must explore – and act – on big questions related to equity, agency, and ownership, and consider the central role AI could play in the transformation of health systems. Thank you to Dean Lloyd Minor of Stanford University School of Medicine Medicine and McKinsey Health Institute Chair Hemant Ahlawat for opening remarks, and to our distinguished speakers including Euan Ashley of Stanford Medicine, Alex Beauvais of QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, Danielle Belgrave of GSK, Colin Murdoch of Isomorphic Labs and Google DeepMind, Kristin Anne Rutter of Cambridge University Health Partners, and our expert moderator, Financial Times Columnist John Thornhill, for an important and illuminating discussion we look forward to continuing. #globalhealth #AIandHealth
