California is pushing back on teacher layoffs as school districts grapple with budget cuts ahead of a fiscal cliff created by the waning of pandemic-era federal relief funds. Several districts’ rescission of layoff notices and the state’s suspension of K-12 staff reductions point to how powerful labor unions’ interests have become, said Marguerite Roza, director of Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab. #teacherlayoffs #teacherunions

Among the arguments the Michigan Department of Education is making in seeking to dismiss allegations of discrimination against students with disabilities is that the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights lacks jurisdiction to enforce regulations for the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act because IDEA compliance falls under the Education Department’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, not OCR. #SpecialEducation

The Title IX rule protecting LGBTQ students faces an uncertain future with preliminary injunctions and a recent Supreme Court decision further blunting its reach. On Thursday, the House voted 210-205 along party lines to pass a joint resolution invoking the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to overturn the Title IX rule and give federal lawmakers 60 congressional days to rescind or approve it. However, even if Congress passes the CRA resolution in response to the Title IX rule, President Joe Biden said in a statement on Monday that he would veto the resolution and allow the rule to go through. #titleix #k12schools
