📣 Tragic news: A shipwreck off the coast of Yemen has claimed 12 lives, with 4 still missing. The vessel carrying 20 Ethiopian migrants capsized near Ta’iz due to poor weather conditions and engine failure. The alarming rise in shipwrecks is a harsh reminder of the risks faced by migrants. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families and IOM is prepared to support the response efforts.
About us
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been active in Yemen since 1994, offering crucial support to vulnerable populations, including displaced individuals, communities affected by conflict, and migrants. With well-established offices in Sana’a, Aden, Ma’rib, and Al Makha, IOM is deeply involved in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, now in its eighth year of conflict. Amidst rising needs fueled by conflict, disease, economic decline, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the breakdown of public services, Yemen faces one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally. The suffering is anticipated to intensify in 2022, particularly for the 4.3 million internally displaced persons. In 2021 alone, nearly 160,000 people were displaced, emphasizing the urgency of humanitarian efforts, especially in conflict-affected areas. Despite the crisis, Yemen remains a destination for migrants from the Horn of Africa. IOM estimates that over 190,000 migrants urgently require humanitarian assistance, with tens of thousands stranded in Yemen, vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. In the previous year, IOM's life-saving operations extended aid to over 7.5 million individuals, providing essential services such as healthcare, clean water, safe sanitation, shelter, displacement camp management, and protection support. This encompassed the rehabilitation of schools, hospitals, and water points, benefiting more than 780,000 people.

Displaced people face some of the harshest conditions with limited access to basic necessities. 🆘 📢 In June, in collaboration w/ the Shelter Cluster & Yemen Union of Sociologists, Social Workers and Psychologist, IOM supported 60 families with emergency shelter kits in Al Azraqeen displacement site in Sana’a, offering security & relief to 380 people. 📦 يواجه النازحون ظروفاً قاسية في ظل محدودية الوصول إلى الأساسيات. 🆘 📢 بالتعاون مع كتلة المأوى والاتحاد اليمني للأخصائيين الاجتماعيين والأخصائيين الاجتماعيين والنفسيين، دعمت المنظمة الدولية للهجرة في يونيو 60 أسرة نازحة بالمأوى الطارئ في موقع الأزرقين في صنعاء، مما يوفر الأمن والإغاثة لأكثر من 380 شخصاً. 📦

عانى علي الكثير من المصاعب في العقد الماضي، ففي البداية اضطر إلى الفرار من بلدته، ثم فقد جميع ممتلكاته ومصدر دخله، وأخيراً توفت زوجته الحبيبة. ولكن، جاءت الإغاثة على شكل مأوى انتقالي جديد قدمته المنظمة الدولية للهجرة بدعم من صندوق الأمم المتحدة المركزي لمواجهة الطوارئ. فهذا الدعم لم يمنحه مكاناً آمناً للإقامة فحسب، بل أعاد له الأمل أيضاً. Ali has had to endure countless hardships over the last decade. He was first forced to flee his hometown, then lost all his belongings and sources of income and lastly, his beloved wife passed away. Fortunately, relief came in the form of a new transitional shelter provided by IOM, with support from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). This support has not only given him a safe place to stay but has also restored his hope for the future. “Ali’s story is a human tragedy that many wouldn’t be able to bear,” explains Shoaib, IOM Field Assistant in Ma’rib. “We did our best to alleviate his suffering.” Watch how IOM’s shelter support provided some relief to Ali in a displacement site in Ma’rib.
