Diablo Valley College recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Health Sciences and Kinesiology Athletic Complex in Pleasant Hill, California, with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. The HMC Architects design team, DVC faculty and staff, and prominent community members were in attendance to mark the construction milestone. The inspiring $35 million, 32,155 SF athletic and student environment celebrates the school's history, identity, and achievements. Challenged with a hilly campus topography and existing built infrastructure, the design creatively ties the complex contextually and re-establishes a new identity for the east part of the campus. To enhance athletic performance and the educational learning environment, the group set goals to create a transparent and collaborative environment where a network of buildings and outdoor spaces establish a new athletic identity on the campus, evoke college pride, and draw student body and community participation. #hmcarchitects #designforgood Kitchell  Lathrop Construction Associates, Inc. We’re proud to be part of the innovative rainwater management system at the Interface head office in Atlanta built in 2018. This LEED V4 certified project uses a 15,000-gallon rainwater tank to reduce demand on the Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier, one of the smallest watersheds serving a major metro area. By integrating a rainwater harvesting system, the Interface building provides water for toilet flushing and roof garden irrigation. The harvested water undergoes multi-stage treatment, including UV disinfection, to meet local non-potable water standards.   Separately, Ecovie provided a municipal water treatment system to meet USGBC's WELL certification for the building. Working alongside Introba and Georgia Water Tanks, we helped ensure a sustainable future for both the building and the region’s precious water resources. The Ohana Montage Health Facility located in Monterey, California, has recently earned a spot on TIME's list of Best Inventions of 2024 in the design category!⁠ ⁠ This project changes the narrative on the traditionally cold and institutional feel often associated with behavioral and mental healthcare facilities. Emphasizing a connection to nature, the interior features timber finishes that reflect the surrounding oak trees, while ample natural light pours in through large floor-to-ceiling windows, offering connection to the outside world. The building's form is characterized by gentle, flowing curves that encircle a central courtyard.⁠ ⁠ This mass timber and steel hybrid facility is one of largest healthcare buildings to use cross-laminated timber. It's unique curvature design used timber joists as a ruled surface, with the two-way spanning nature of CLT allowing further articulation in the undulating shape.⁠ ⁠ Congratulations to NBBJ Design, the comprehensive project team, and to the client, Montage Health on this well-deserved recognition. OAC is excited to share that we have been working since this past spring with Western Washington University (WWU) on their campus heating conversion project, which will lead to significant reductions in campus greenhouse gas emissions!   WWU relies on an aging steam plant and distribution system to heat its campus. Outdated technology, operator staffing requirements, and volatile gas prices make maintaining and operating the system increasingly challenging.   A project implementation plan is now underway to analyze system configuration, explore emerging technologies, identify project procurement method/s, and consider integration with a larger community district energy system currently in development.
